Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Just different boys, I imagine.

BTW, have you tried googling 'Alekhine' lately? Mrs Al's profile is very prominent. Does it contain wikis?

As Frogspawn's resident Eye, this concerns me. I seem to be turning into a quantum anomaly.

<ClueSock>

the game is simple you have to guess the owner of the sock puppet and the sock puppet based on the clues and interrogation

possible scenarios

it was Mrs O'D in the Kibitzer's Cafe with the Hammer and Sickle

it was Major Bill with the Yellow Canary on the Carlsen page

it was SeeSee with Kneesocks in the barn

  Stonehenge: <Domdaniel: <Henge> You are the world's oldest working computer, aren't you?> Oldest yes, working no.

<Dom> I have a question which has been bothering me for quite a while. I have been seeing things lately, you know stuff and things, you know. To be more vague (vaguer?), I have been seeing double digits. Every time I look on the clock it's 11.11 or 21.21 and so on. Do you think I've gone mad?

Now I've found this site but according to <The Queen> it's wack and who am I to disagree with Her Majesty?http://www.crystalinks.com/11.11.html

  jessicafischerqueen: <stony>

Heh-- fear not. I did say it was "wack" at your place.

But here at Dom's place I told him it was all true and that he should immediately begin "calculating."

Dom likes to calculate.

I was hoping for several pages this time.

Once me and my friend <Lindy> were getting Lebonese fast food in Montreal and he said "look at the cash register."

Our change was 6.66

But then when we got into a taxi right after he blanched and pointed at the number on the top thingie--

yep -- 666.

(true story).

Also, remember that 6 x 6 x 6 = 36.

36 - 11.11 = 21.

And 21 is the name of a really bad gambling movie.

I'm just saying.

Sep-09-08  Red October: what were you doing in Lebanon ??

  Stonehenge: <666> Yes, interesting number, just like 144 (144.000) it is mentioned in the Bible. I saw the following formulas on a Dutch site, but I'm afraid I suck at maths:

phi = -sin(666)*2
phi = -cos(144)*2
cos(144) = sin(666) = -phi/2

Sep-09-08  Harvestman: 666 is also the number of species of spider known to occur in Great Britain.

Well, give or take a rarity or two.

Sep-10-08  Woody Wood Pusher: <jessicafischerqueen: Some of my co-teachers had a bit too much of the "magic potion" last night.>

May I inquire what subject you teach, I am planning on a career in teaching myself in a few years when I finish my English Literature degree.

  jessicafischerqueen: <The Woodman>

Good grief and here I was thinking you were older than me. Probably because of your fine red beard!!

I got a English Literature Degree and I'm teaching English to little pie faces here in Korea.

I teach grades 8-12 at a Public School.

It's probably the easiest teaching job on the planet, as nobody except me can speak English for at least 300 miles in any direction.

For all they know, I'm teaching them French.

Bon chance mon ami

  jessicafischerqueen: Hi Ho <Dom>, I was just thinking about you.

Bad news, I'm afraid.

Someone is spreading rumors about you in the <Blogosphere>.

The prestigious <Buttermouth Blog> reports that you secretly prefer Jethro Tull's <Aqualung> to <Highway 61 Revisited>.

They are also claiming that you regard <archaic British agricultural public policy> to be the most interesting subject ever mined by pop music.

I'd help out, but since I started the rumors in the first place I'm afraid I'd lose "credibiilty".

  Domdaniel: <Henge> I suspect those cos[666] formulas are rubbish. They're possibly reasonable approximations - but it's remarkably easy to come up with approximations.

I recommend the Penguin Book of Strange and Interesting Numbers, if you can find it (if it exists?). Not crazy numerology, but a blend of fringe maths and recreational number theory.

As for those clock anomalies, things like that happen literally every day.

  Domdaniel: <Jess> What ees thees Aquaveet music? Jethro Tull's finest hour - apart from the invention of agriculture - came with *Thick as a Brick*.

Now there's a concept album. Something about a boy genius? I was at a susceptible age when it came out.

"So where the hell was Biggles when you needed him ... ?"

I never deny rumours, btw. They may prove useful - or even true - in a parallel universe somewhere.
