Domdaniel: <Trig> *Cannabalism* refers to a metabolism dependent on cannabinoids, as documented in the John Prine song 'Illegal Smile'. Perhaps you mean *cannibalism*, aka anthropophagy or the eating of human flesh? This is something that tribes tend to accuse their enemies of, but rarely admit to themselves. Apart from the sainted Dr Lecter, of course.
Jul-01-09  achieve: <Perhaps you mean *cannibalism*> Nah, too far fetched...

I think there was a "mix-up" involving "cannabism", but I can not be certain of this.

Cannilinguism aka no shag and no moustache may also play a role.

Bad news!

Is it?

jessicafischerqueen: Oh what sorry times we live in when...

Well you know what "principles" are worth eh?

Only as much as your "annoyance level" permits.

I believe this was the thesis of <Heart of Darkness>, if I'm not mistaken.

Case #2331-

The local magistrates are going to plow under a few square miles of prime agricultural land in our village here.

The local farmers have secured police permission to bang drums and howl in protest- with loudspeakers- big electric ones-- on the main street in town.

I am aghast at the idea that they are going to plough this land under for a "new city".

My view from the back of my school will now be of garish buildings and noisy cars instead of the waving sea of barley that's out there now.

But the protestors have been driving me crazy all week-

So I've discovered- today- that I'd rather see North Korea drop a bomb on them- just to stop their racket-- than I would like to see the farmland saved.

Even though I want the farmland saved for selfish reasons (It's quiet and I like to look at it.)

So today I had my headphones on blasting Philip Glass to "calm down" and drown out the Protestor's racket.

So I heard a huge banging even then- I tore off my headphones, ready to go to the police- even though they wouldn't even talk to me (can't speak English) and it would be maybe the stupidest thing a foreigner could possibly do here-- only to realize that these new huge bangings was a thunderstorm.

Which presaged a deluge that chased the Protestors away lest their electronic equipment be ruined by the rain.

Then I felt very foolish. I still wished the rain had washed them away, though.

Look how far- so very far- my emotions/thoughts on this matter are from the Kantian ideal of a "moral principle"-

The "I ought to" for no other reason than I have judged it to be morally right.

Kant said that people can't know if they have a principle or not until their "I ought" is tested by a conflict with self-interest.

Smart fellow, this old Kraut.

Bloody Germans.

(Some say he was secretly a Scotsman)

<Dom> if you ever produce a TV show called <This Old Kraut>, I want to be one of the writers. I will email my resume now.

Jul-02-09  Trigonometrist: Brilliant lyrics from one of my favourite songs...

Domdaniel: <Jess> Ja, Donner often accompanies Blitzen. The gods must be angry.

Can these Korean chappies actually make farmland and green belts vanish *just like that*? Here, you'd have ten years of planning applications and appeals, then ten years of tribunals into crooked politicians, then a long period of protests and hippies chaining themselves to holes in the ground.

jessicafischerqueen: It's the same here-- the development project in question took two years to get permission.

Now they have it, and construction begins in a few months.

This is a last-ditch effort by a few farmers to stop it.

<Korea> may well have the most corrupt democracy on the planet, but the citizens actually love demonstrating.

It's their number one hobby, and they are good at it.

Recent mass demonstrations concerned "US Beef" and "Anti-Buddhist Government policies"=

Involving hundreds of thousands of people taking to the streets of major cities and temporarily paralyzing them.

Your average "Korean in the street" takes more advantage of democratic freedoms than your average "Canadian in the street," that's for sure.

Mainly because your average Canadian is never actually in the street.

He's in front of his TV with a giant bag of potato chips.

<Tim> did you know that <Dom> has converted his new forum to be a reality TV show?

Here it is.

Reality.

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Jul-03-09  Boomie: I suggest trying The Firesign Theater's reality show "Beat the Reaper". Contestants are wheeled in on gurneys and injected. They then have 30 seconds to guess what disease they have. If they are correct, they are given the antidote and move on to the lightening round.
Jul-03-09  Boomie: I just laid a steaming heap of Hotspur on the team game concerning long lines. The team scrapped the forum system in favor of long lines on the main page and haven't won since. Coinkidink? I don't think so.

jessicafischerqueen: <Tim, Tim, Tim, Tim, Tim, Tim>. Well done- I applaud you.

But...

Centaur chess is dead.

It was dead from its very inception- in my view an ill-concieved idea from the start. Mainly because it has nothing to do with competitive chess.

Check out some of the "computer v. computer" games from the recent world championship to see some abortions. You might benefit as much by staring at a computer code printed out.

Ridiculous. They can crush any human, any time. But when they play each other they make "silly moves"- There's been some kind of "resigning the game thingie" built in to this competition as well- some human factor there programmed in, or else the operators are allowed to resign, or ask/accept a draw.

Otherwise some of these games would be 300 plus moves.

It's painful to see. It makes me want to puke.

My chess computer is my slave. He works for me. He checks my games for BLUNDERS.

That's all he does.

Oh yes also he's an excellent sparring partner for endgames or from specific positions.

He's a great slave.

I own him though. I paid money for him and he's never allowed to leave the plantation.

Now- "chess games"- are not for computers. I don't care how many "Oh no= the computer doesn't pick our moves for us" yahoos you bring out of the woodwork.

It's bullcrap. Rybka picks the moves on sliding long ply "analysis"

(And worse- it's not even *real* analysis- because none of these people undersands the "why" or "wherefore" of ANY OF THESE LINES).

Also, it's BULLCRAP that "studying" the positons during these games actually increases the playing strength of anyone- or teaches anyone anything about how to play chess.

That's simply false. Quite the opposite. In these "games" (abortions), there is no demand made of the "players" (people who "agree" with long Rybka lines) to answer the question "why" that is necessary to learn chess.

As you always put it to me- (I'd like to put it to the lady? heh)-

"The tactic not played"- you have to understand YOURSELF why it is not played.

This never, ever happens in the course of one of these Centaur games.

They DISGUST ME.

Using a computer(s) during a REAL CHESS GAME is cheating. Period.

Chess is for humans, silly.

It's a draw by force.

The author of this post, or any other NINCOMPOOP on that Umansky game page, couldn't win with or against the <Najdorf> against any HUMAN PLAYER who was say, 100 points higher rated.

PERIOD.

It conveys NO INFORMATION THAT HAS ANY MEANING TO A HUMAN BEING.

Consequently, it is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS.

Jul-03-09  Boomie: <JessiePoo: Check out some of the "computer v. computer" games from the recent world championship to see some abortions. You might benefit as much by staring at a computer code printed out.>

I played over Rybka vs Deep Sjeng, 2009 and was amazed and bewildered not to mention bewitched and bothered.

But I wonder...is our objection akin to the Nazis' view of modern art? The eyes belong in the front, not on the side like some go ddamned flounder. Patton's speech has improved my eloquence significantly, the bilious bastard.

Could it be we just don't understand what the hell these monsters are doing? Are we silicon Luddites? If we let the machines play chess, we'll all be out of work!

I know you have a deep seeded dread of machines taking over the world. And not just the world, but more importatly, your world. Your instinct is probably right but is it paranoia or paranormal?

As long as The Team games have a social aspect, I think they are a plus. But since the demise of the forum system, that aspect has largely vanished. If they bring back the forums, I may jump in for another go.

Jul-03-09  Boomie: <JessClarise: I loved your post though- you are a much nicer and smarter person than I am>

jessicafischerqueen: Well let them have their fun- although as you say, human fun normally includes an actual "social aspect."

This is one of the reasons that "internet chess" is just ridiculous.

It bears no resemblance to OTB chess with a clock and a long time control against a stronger player for a "fun chess experience."

I understand why our host <Dom> does not play internet chess.

For me, it's the only way I can get an opponent who can give me an interesting game, for the time being.

But my games at my Chess Club- I loved them, win or lose.

And I loved the people I played against, played WITH there.

Wonderful fun.

But yes of course, machine v machine is not chess- it's more like a "numerical/mathematical essay" that none really understands.

Bottom line is there's nothing to worry about, vis a vis paranoia about "chess engines taking over".

Simply because no human can usefully remember enough "computer lines" to ever use them in a game.

So if Computers busted chess completely, this would have little or no effect on actual human play- one against another OTB in the same ratings range.

We should reserve our paranoia for other areas where machines may pose a threat.

Like computers programming computers etc.

I'm not talking about a Puter network "gaining consciousness" and trying to kill us, a la <Terminator> and 98000 other movies.

I mean, what if the US Power Grid goes down due to a computer problem that only another computer knows how to fix?

Might be time to "batten the hatches" then.

Mrs. Gets Mad about Centaur Chess, but isn't actually Insane.

Jul-03-09  whiskeyrebel: Chess machine versus chess machine seems as underwhelming to me as a real live player as (I imagine) a tryst between inflatable dolls. I believe it's the fear of losing, chess wise and socially that drives loners into such passive forms of entertainment. Perhaps one could derive more excitement outside of ones lair, going to a barber shop to watch haircuts or to an airport to watch random airplanes land.
