 | | Open Defence: why dont we answer 1.f4 with 1...f5 ? |
|
Sep-21-09
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Deffi>
We used to, but now it's considered "jejune," apparently. Wish I knew what "jejune" meant. <Doggimus> knows. When I posted one of my games, he once said "I wouldn't do something so jejune as to run your game through a chess engine." So it's something bad.
Pretty sure.
<Dom> I'd be happy to write <Sweet Pea's> part. You can cover the sub-limes and other dodgy fruits. From <Asterix in Britain>: Grocer: "Oh, so this melon's bad, is it?
Customer: "Rather, old fruit."
HAHAHAHAHAAH
(As translated by the BRILLIANT Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge, who had to re-write all of the puns into English. You see, there are no puns in France. There used to be, but the conservatives had them all deported) |
|
Sep-21-09
 | | Open Defence: do French puns make one puny ? |
|
Sep-21-09
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Yes, they do. That's why Asterix is so small. |
|
Sep-21-09
 | | Domdaniel: And not just the puns -- the names too. Getafix, Ptenisnet, ceteraque. |
|
Sep-21-09
 | | Domdaniel: As Cecil B de Mille said, concerning a movie about Baltic fur-smugglers and their male assistants chained to the oars of the longship: "For de Mille, young fur-henchmen can't be rowing." |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Unhygenix, Curious Odus (heh), Impedimenta, Dogmatix. Speekinawhich, why aren't there any <menhirs> in here? |
|
| Sep-22-09 | | mack: Oi, you. If you haven't booked accomodation for Galway yet then I'd get a move on -- they're quite short on the rooms reserved for chess at the Salthill now. I'm staying there this year. You can always kip on my floor. |
|
Sep-22-09
 | | Domdaniel: <mack> Ta. As you correctly intuit, I haven't booked a place to stay yet. That's uncanny ... it's almost as if you *knew* me. I suppose if I get stuck, some pal or other might have a spare bed in their de luxe suite with hot and cold running isolani ... ? I'm surprised, actually. Salthill never runs out of rooms -- apart from a two-month run in summer which includes race week, Galway arts festival, a film 'fleadh', and sundry other events. During this period there are no rooms to be had anywhere. For love or money -- I've tried both, and my score is 0/2. Or 0/3 if you include the time I tried corporate money rather than my own meagre stash. No dice. Galway is not impressed by things corporate. During race week, a helicopter lands at the racetrack every 30 seconds, all day, disgorging wankers like fruit flies. The best bet is to memorize the line "Ba mhaith liom seomra, le do thoil" (I'd like a room, please). Pronounced something like "Buh wah lyum showm-rah, ledduh hull". Chances are the room-keeper won't speak Irish, but will have a great *gra* (love, affection, fondness) for it nonetheless. They should respond effusively. |

 | | Open Defence: <why aren't there any <menhirs> in here?> are those the same as perpendicular pronouns ? btw <mack> I got suckered into playing against the Rat as White against <nescio>... this will be fun... or not... |
|
Sep-23-09
 | | jessicafischerqueen: If you put one of the pawns on <e6> it's more properly termed "Le Ratte." |
|
| Sep-23-09 | | mack: <OD> Ooh, where can I see the game in progress? |

 | | Domdaniel: <mack> Salthill accom is sorted. Ta for the timely rem. Now I suppose I'd better enter the thing. |
|
Sep-25-09
 | | Domdaniel: <deffi> I defer, of course, to ratting experts such as <mack> ... but once ...d5 is played doesn't it become more like a Gurgenidze Caro-Kann than a true Rat? Note: these names refer to hypothetical entities and may not be legally construed as advice in any time universe. |
|
Sep-25-09
 | | Open Defence: I'm no rodent expert either....
I was going by cg's classification
T Ernst vs L Heinimaki, 2001
:) |
|
Sep-25-09
 | | Domdaniel: <Deffi> Interesting they should call it 'accelerated' when the d-pawn takes two moves to reach d5. What's the non-accelerated version like? But I see it's a Rat *and* a Gurgenidze, so we're both right. |

 | | Domdaniel: A quote from the superb science fiction novel 'Brasyl' by Ian McDonald -- set, with much quantum weirdness, at different points in Brazilian history between 1750 and 2030. A central character is Luis Quinn, a Portuguese-Irish jesuit in 1750 on a heart-of-darkness mission upriver. Quinn is a linguist, speaking many languages. He explains a quirk of the Irish language thus:
<
"My native language - that is Irish", Quinn said. "In Irish we have no words for *yes* or *no*. If you are asked a question, all you can do is confirm or deny the questioner. Thus, in reply to the question 'Are you going to Galway?' the answer "I am indeed going"."That must make conversation very trying", the dona said. "Not at all", Quinn answered. "It just makes it very hard for an Irishman to say no to you."> Quinn's contention is true, though in practice 'I am indeed going' would be shortened to 'taim' (I am) or 'is ea' (that is [the case]). Still, it's an interesting example. Are <mack> and *myself* going to Galway? Indeed ... |

 | | Open Defence: I see a long haired lass has got thy attention... |
|
Sep-26-09
 | | Domdaniel: <deffi> This has been known to happen. My attention wanders, especially during chess games. But - if you mean the GOTD - I would've said what I said regardless of who the players were. Or their follicular attributions. . . |
|
Sep-26-09
 | | Domdaniel: "He would answer to 'Hi!'
Or to any loud cry
Such as 'Fry me!'
Or 'Fritter my wig!' ..."

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Yes <D> I know. It took me over a year to figure out that <jessicafischerqueen: <mack> never could have outfought <Santino>. I didn't know it until this moment, but it was <The Slid> all along.> <Eyal> found the original SLID post and linked it for me. However, who said the post I just wrote there?
It's a paraphrase, so a "search the Kibbutx" probly won't work well. It's from a man, if that helps narrow it down. heh
What's all this about JR Tall King?
I'm surprised you weren't lynched. Although if you watch the new documentary "Second Skin", about WORLD OF WARCRAFT gamers, you'll realize that much, much, much nerdier people than chess players exist. If that's possible.
(hint- it's very possible) |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: GOTD
Has GOTD to be one of the ugliest looking and sounding acronyms of all time. Also, I can never remember what it stands for without thinking about it for a bit. Will someone please help with a list of "alternate words" so I can choose a suitable mnemoniniinic? G-
O-
T-
D- Thank you. |

| Sep-26-09 | | hms123: <Got Out Touched Darn> |

Sep-26-09
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <H> excellent choice! Please keep them coming gentlemen until I find one I can memorize easily. |
