   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: Gotta go see a play now: it's about a Jewish circus strongman on the skids, who winds up squatting in a Catholic church. The Sanctuary Lamp, by Tom Murphy. I've read it and it's superb, but this show is directed by the author, in his 70s and among the wisest beings I ever met.

A typo in the invitation they sent me caused the play's name to be changed to 'The Sanctuary Lap'.

Taking comfort where you find it, I guess. Will report back, later.

Domdaniel: <Mighty Isis> That chick has a Goa'uld implant. If the vid lasted any longer we'd get the whole deep-voiced glowing-eyed obey-your-god routine.

Links without hints as to content *do* stimulate my curiosity. But isn't that, well, dangerous for felines?

The play was brilliant, btw, and I had a chat with the author, but now I have about eight hours to sleep, wake, and write 1000 words, in any order I like.

Start with sleep, I think. If four hours could maintain Margaret Thatcher in a state of silent screaming lunacy (a Bacon/Velazquez Pope on bad speed cut with worse acid ...), it'll have to do me too. ZZZ.

Annie K.: Heh - no, that goes back far before Stargate. :) It was a series - 'Isis', aka 'The Secrets of Isis'. Best described as a precursor of 'Wonder Woman'. Although I have to admit that all I really remembered of this series was the opening sequence - I didn't actually know much English at the time, for one thing.

But you wanted Isis, so I fetched her for ya... :p

  Domdaniel: <Annie> -- <me no has TV>

Of course. I rather suspect that we have one here: I've heard noises from the south wing. Perhaps the servants have one to watch horse-racing and breeding and other hobbies of their ilk.

Black and white, I imagine. As are we all, except when the green tint shows. But not in front of the servants.

Domdaniel: Uh, out on the town *again* tonight, that's two knights in a row. Help, I'm turning into a fortysomething.

It was dull enough first time round.

Back later. Orr-Knott.

Domdaniel: <Annie> Izzat Leet-ish, or a <how to stagger home> diagram. I coulda used the latter, uh, latterly.

I once had a book dedicated to me in ASCII. I could read it at the time, but now I haven't a clue.

chancho: Dang! No comments on the Sasquatch fight? :-) I remember watching that back in the 1970's, and how it seemed so... so entertaining... but upon seeing it on youtube after all these years... I'm frankly amazed at how awful it was!

Annie K.: <Dom> just Vulcan, I think. That was the idea anyway... :)

<chancho> couldn't watch it yet - have the whole youtube domain blocked at work (even proxies won't help, I tried...) just got home and here my Flash is acting up. Will try to sort it out later.

Apr-15-10
Premium Chessgames Member
Annie K.: Eh, I give up. Everything else works on YouTube, just that one video keeps complaining about Flash. Fuhgeddit.

<Dom> now I'll have to spend the rest of my life wondering what definition 6-D might have been...? <Does one have to do her own adjectives around here?!>

...oh. :D

Domdaniel: <Annie> I could try a coy and mysterious routine, I suppose, but I'd never get it past you. So I'll just admit to picking the words 'six' and 'down' for vaguely aesthetic reasons (they scan). Without actually writing a clue to fit.

Yours would do nicely, if I could solve it...

Around here? Nwapsdaot? Uh huh. Something like 'unheretical' ... is that unethical around here? Nearly. Just remove a broken inverted hen. Hmmm ...

Heh... you've overcomplicated it. I don't write the clues for the Holiday Hunt! :s

I was just trying to visually represent the Vulcan farewell hand sign - I believe it was "live long and prosper"? - in response to your preceding "Orr-Knott" clause. Sorry about the confusion.

<chancho> thanks, I'll check them out when I get home. :)

Apr-15-10

Domdaniel: <Annie> Yeah, I got the Vulcan hand sign. I even checked, doing it with each hand to see how it looked. I thought maybe being left-handed was the reason I missed it first time round: extra digit on the unfamiliar side?

But no. \\ // / is a *left* hand seen from behind. Or a right seen from the front? Hmm. Maybe I'm used to seeing myself from another perspective, or summat.

Vulcans are smart but *so* repressed. Give me Romulans any time.

Apr-15-10
Premium Chessgames Member
Annie K.: :) I would, but I've dropped out of the ST scene so long ago that I can't really even tell Romulans apart from Klingons. :s

Domdaniel: Hmmm. Dropped out, but kept the hand-signals. Where have I seen that before? The Masons? The Illuminati?

Never mind, I've forgotten. And anyway: whereof we cannot hand-signal, thereof we shut up.
