Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: <you can has snow?> Erm, the *snowman* will meet the *falcon* at the usual place with a key of um, ice cream....

But yes, the precipitations have gone coldly crystalline.

Annie K.: Well, Hermes supposedly has a sensa yuma, but somehow I never really liked him. Oddly enough, as my favorite deity since age 10, Sun Wu-K'ung, is also the trickster type.

(Then again, I wasn't very critical back then...) :p

And yeah, I've known of that godchecker site for years, and think quite highly of it, <because> they actually have Sun Wu-K'ung (aka Monkey) listed: :D

Wait, you know how to cook?! Most impressed here! ;)

Also - snow-wise - envious, as promised...

Dec-18-10  MostlyAverageJoe: <Domdaniel: ... And congrats to MAJ>

Thanks. I must admit, though, that finding anagrams leaves me with internal distaste. It is like shooting fish in a barrel: copy the text, paste it into a command-line window, wait a second, paste url, get another 4 months. And I did not even expect the "Lipreader man" to be an anagram -- I just did a routine check:

Domdaniel: Drat. I missed #40 (already?) ... I had a few minutes to check out some 4-letter names vs 4-letter names ... Grob, Gilg, Pirc et al ... and would have hit on Zita before long. I had 'fairy' as a possible for the 'composer's piece' ... along with wazir, camel, zebra, alfil, dummy and janus.

Sigh.

What happens next is ... nothing for several hours, then a clutch of clues once I've retired. A guy could get paranoid very easily here.

I *know* MAJ is a better decrypter, and has superior technology to boot. But I should be able to hold my own, as it were, against the pack.

I cooked a darn good risotto, and I didn't bring a computing device.

Dec-18-10  hms123: <Dom> I love to cook shrimp risotto.

First, it involves a lot of stirring (which I am good at).

Second, it involves shrimp.

Third, it involves wine, along with artichoke hearts, garlic, onions, and whatever else is about.

Fourth, it involves eating shrimp risotto (which I am very good at).

Domdaniel: Not that Zita is actually in the solution given. Sefc I can see, but there's something wrong with the 3rd column...
Dec-18-10  Ragh: <MAJ> Would it be possible to get a copy of your program? Or is it a strictly copyrighted material?! :)

Domdaniel: <hms> Mmm. I don't use shrimp, but I've been honing my risotto technique for 25 years. Basil pesto is my current love, along with some unlikely cheddar-type cheese.

Domdaniel: < Basil pesto is my current love> Oops. I've outed Basil. He'll be peeved.
Dec-18-10  hms123: <Dom> Basil will be fine--the US Senate is about to repeal the <Don't Ask; Don't Tell> law in favor of a saner system. I think it will be called <Mind your own business>.

Here's something nice to go with that thought: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcls...

Dec-18-10  hms123: <Dom> I hope you are tucked in someplace warm. I am watching your massive snow storm on the telly. Worst in 25 years or so they claim. 60 cms of snow? Really?

Domdaniel: <Annie> Course I can cook ... some things, anyway. How else would I get to eat things I like? Without frequenting Indian and Italian restaurants?

Annie K.: Well, you could always just decide you like ready-made meals, and cold food... like I do... but good point, rilly. ;)

Domdaniel: An apocryphal Beefheart story says that, as a young man, he worked as a vacuum cleaner salesman. One day, he called to a house in the LA area and realized that the man at the door was Aldous Huxley, author of The Doors of Perception.

Don, the future Captain, was struck dumb at meeting his hero. Then he pulled himself together, held up a vacuum cleaner, and said: "Sir, this machine sucks!"

Domdaniel: <hms> It's not really *that* bad here - I've seen worse conditions in Dublin, not to mention Copenhagen. But it's very odd at this end of the country, where there hasn't been a major blizzard scenario for decades.

Domdaniel: "This ain't no town to stop in
Ain't no straw for my horse
Ain't no water for my horse
And there ain't no Santa Claus on the evenin' stage..."

Uh huh huh. Huh huh.

Dec-18-10  dakgootje: The problem with pesta and risotto etc is that you need a little bit of a lot of ingredients you rarely ever use [pecorino etc] :(

Annie K.: OK <dakkie>, I understand that you can cook too... ;)
Dec-18-10  dakgootje: true! Perhaps I shall have that pattern in a couple of years ;)
Dec-18-10  dakgootje: Of course I can! what else do you think I do besides writing weird word-witticisms here?!

Annie K.: Ah, well, put that way, it does seem to follow... ;)

My #1 favorite food is as follows: take one can of minced tuna and one diced onion, mix them up in a bowl, add sour cream and salt, mix again. Serve with bread or a bun.

Anybody wants exchange other recipes? Maybe I'll want to try them sometime... ;)

Dec-18-10  hms123: <Dom> Thanks for checking on the <Stein> mystery. I am glad it wasn't just my entering one of your short stories.
