   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Dec-21-10  dakgootje: Innaresting no? Been out and about in the wildy wildy outlands as well - so with our combined absentivity you would have expected at least one clue. Perhaps a double negative did the trick.

Domdaniel: <dak> Indeed. Lemme see, 9 remaining clues divided into, say, 81 hours between now and the evening of the 24th ... suggests longer intervals... of 9 hours. Even if they end it *early* on the 24th, say 63 hours left, and 7 hours per klu....?!

Am I miscalculating?

Dec-21-10  dakgootje: Yeah, I had noticed earlier on they seemed to get published a bit quicker then you'd expect so that the last clues would probably trickle in much slower.

Let's hope the remaining clues are HARD - then we won't miss them :D

Domdaniel: Let us spray ... as Annie's cats used to tell one another before she taught them to be nice girls.

There *should* be at least one HARD one left, I think. I haven't kept track, but I think one or two *actual thing* prizes might be left. Since my membership now runs until the 24th century, one of those would be nice ...

Domdaniel: BTW, on checking my <historic klu hunt database>, I see that <MAJ> has won a *thing* every year ... even in 2007, when his solitary prize was a 4-DVD set.

Them were the days.

Domdaniel: Chatting is a great excuse to keep refreshing pages, innit? And doesn't seem *quite* as moronic as staring at a screen and hitting 'refresh' every few seconds ...
Dec-21-10  dakgootje: <Chatting is a great excuse to keep refreshing pages, innit?>

Hahahaha, absolutely true! I actually have a seperate tab-page on the clues page so when I see that, the current top, clue #44 has been replaced by #45 I know I missed another one ;)

Ah yes, in the first years dvd-sets and staunton-sets.. would've loved such a prize :P

Currently my membership runs to just after next christmas so even if I do not manage to win another 4 months this year - I have 64 more chances next year :D

Dec-21-10  dakgootje: There were 12 premium prizes. If I counted correctly [counting is hard!] then only 8 have been given away so far.

Which would mean out of the remaining 9 clues, 4 are hard ones! That would be great! :D

  Domdaniel: < in the first years dvd-sets and staunton-sets> I won a staunton set in '08 and a T-shirt in '09 ... ironically, I suppose, I've never won a book or a zine subscription.

Maybe they don't know I can read.

Domdaniel: *Four* left? Really? That is good. Dat is goed.

Even three would be acceptable...

Dec-21-10  dakgootje: My first clue was a booklet of some sorts! Fairly strange because the clue was not all that hard.

It was purpleish though, so it did not really do it for me.

Dec-21-10  dakgootje: ...wanna trade your staunton set for my booklet?

;D

Dec-21-10  crawfb5: <Maybe they don't know I can read.>

Maybe they know you read too much.

Careful, young man. Wees voorzichtig. You don't wanna turn into some old obsessive like me, do you?

Dec-21-10  dakgootje: That actually reminds me I do not read any books currently! Now I could either hack a path through a wall of snow to the library or order one online and then mister mailman just brings it..

Domdaniel: That current top line, The Great Contretemps, was a klu I missed entirely.

But every time I see it now I hear a similar line from some old country song ...

<But to my surprise
When I opened my eyes
I was a victim of the great compromise ...>

John Prine, maybe.

Dec-21-10  dakgootje: <You don't wanna turn into some old obsessive like me, do you?>

Noooo, would not want that!!

I simply always have about 20 pages open in firefox - starts up that way - because otherwise I have to go through all the hassle of opening and closing seperate sites.. So a page more, or a page less, does not really count as obsessive :D

Domdaniel: <I simply always have about 20 pages open in firefox>

Ah. That's clever. I have a sort of Cro-magnon fear of trying to get a computer to do too much stuff at once, even when it can.

It derives from the days when you had 1K of memory left and suddenly ran out of

Dec-21-10  dakgootje: Ah yes, I had similar feelings with my previous computer - it was fairly unstable so I limited my amount of pages there as well. My current laptop should be fairly good though and the processor-use isn't all that high so I do not forsee any problems :)

btw: still no clue... 10 bucks say that it will appear when I am having dinner :P

Domdaniel: Chessbucks or real bucks? MacDongles or Rijstaffel?

The variables are too, well, variable.

;)

Dec-21-10  dakgootje: Chessbucks! smells like some traditional meat-potatoes-vegetables combination. No smell of the vegetables though so my guess is endive.

:(

Domdaniel: Endives. I believe that was the favorite snack of <Roger's Wah-wah Rabbits>, who sometimes played with the Bonzo Dog Doo-dah Band.

I'd ask Mr Stanshall, but he's dead.

So, severally, what do you think 'several' means?

Domdaniel: It's only been 6.5 hours or so. The fact that they coincide with daylight in Yurp is statistically non-significant.

I'd best eat soon too. I'm sounding slightly hysterical in a low-blood-sugar kinda way ...

Hypoglycemia? Slightly??

To the West Wing ... bring laptop ...
