Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: Well, Nuklu didn't appear between dawn and dusk. Mind you, there wasn't a lot of daylight to squeeze into.

Squeeze! I'll be end-playing rubber goulashes next ...

Dec-22-10  technical draw: The scene was thus:

My partner in the game was the wife of Lt. Cmdr (chaplain) J.Heydon Lampe. The chaplain was playing the other side with a young man who was a good player. The bidding came to me and I hesitated before saying, "Seven, no trump." The chaplain was on my left and he looked at me surprised then said "double". His wife looked at me for what seemed to me like an eternity then said, "redouble"

As the cards were laid out the chaplain's wife looked at me and said, "you can do it!".

And I did! The chaplain although losing was very happy because he had never added up so many points. The young man mentioned something about a miracle and I myself could not believe it.

That's it. The great Bangkok bridge game circa 1972.

  Domdaniel: The chaplain: http://books.google.ie/books?id=hHj...

TD ... astonishing play. There are few scenarios in which that leap makes sense, and the redouble had to be psychic ... but I believe you.

Dec-22-10  technical draw: Thanks for that link <Dom>. The chaplain would be 100 years old next year but he has probably passed away.

  Domdaniel: Ear we go...
Dec-22-10  dakgootje: Well, even if I had thought of shuffeling the numbers 1-7 around, I would've never tried to find the correct game lol
Dec-22-10  NakoSonorense: I tried 1234567 (like last year's "All good children go to heaven") and then I shuffled the 2 around a little, but then decided that life is too short.

Domdaniel: Ho hum. I dismissed the option of those 5040 perms of 1234567 (OK, 720 start with 1) in the first 3 seconds and went on to finer things... like Bang vs Whosoever.... and Siebenhoffer and Septum ... and versions of 5040 in octal and binary and other bases, which don't fit anyhoo ... and historic 7th move brilliancies. Which to my mind are 'not obvious', though I can see how some might look at it the other way round. How was I to know that only a fraction of the 1372465 games worked?

Congrats to <Sastre> for perseverance.

After that 13-hour marathon wait, the randomizer *might* spring another one soonish. I'll stick around.

Weird math fact: 7! + 1 = 5041 = 71^2

Domdaniel: < While 5,040 is a depressingly large number of game pages to check, only about 600 of them are legal game ID numbers.>

I would like to gently caution CG against the use of words such as 'depressingly' in a Klu Komment.

Dec-22-10  dakgootje: <and versions of 5040 in octal and binary and other bases, which don't fit anyhoo >

It fits in base-4; 1032300. But I had quickly tried that. Twice.

Also, 5040 is the sum of 42 consecutive primes :)

Domdaniel: <5040 is the sum of 42 consecutive primes> Wow. I'm impressed. That, I did not know.

Can we call them <dakkie numbers> or do they already have a name? Not just any old sum of consecutive primes, but 42 of them....

  Domdaniel: O Nuklu
We adopted Thee
As our GID.

But it'll be over soon.

Is there a rest home
For superannuated deities?
Give my regards to Thor,
and Zeus, and that other Guy.
O Nuklu.

Domdaniel: I just had to leave that last post out where it was for a couple of hours, creating the Frogspawn equivalent of a *cocktail party moment*, when a sudden silence descends *just* as you say something like "gabba gabba you research into sperm whale intelligence gabba gabba hay..."

Or whatever. Thanx, dak.

  Domdaniel: O Nuklu
Thy timekeeping is gone to the dogs.
Some GID
Thee turned out to be.

In future Hunts
Perhaps *some* random Klus
Mixed with others at predestined times
Might be better.

Don't you deity types
Go for
That Which Is Pre-ordained?
Just wondering aloud, Nuklu.
