 | | Domdaniel: <cro777> Well spotted. Last time I played Mr Bennett was last summer in this same hotel, when we were both on 2/2 ... and he won the game, and subsequently the tournament. Revenge is being contemplated as we speak.
But we won't be speaking *much*, because I don't have a web connection in my room. I'm typing this in the hotel lobby. Last time I stayed here, I remember using my laptop wirelessly in my room ... but it seems that wireless broadband is only available 'in public areas' of the hotel, or rooms that happen to be sufficiently near them. Which I was last time, but not now. A pox on them. I'm off to scrounge a cable or something. |

 | | Domdaniel: The fools, the fools. They've given me two blacks in succession... Heh. |
|
| Apr-06-12 | | Memethecat: Go Dom go, go Dom go, gooooooo Dom.
Seriously, I hope you play a blinder.
Rooting fur ya. |
|
| Apr-06-12 | | waustad: Oh yeah, you sadi you were playing Easter weekend. Best of luck! Or maybe I ought to say something stagey like "break a leg." Let's hope that doesn't get taken literally. |
|
| Apr-07-12 | | frogbert: anyone seen the ubiquitous scape goat? i was herding some cats and goats when that joker ran off. i heard he was seen around here. ;o) |
|
| Apr-07-12 | | MarkFinan: <frogbert> In your above post you mentioned a player called "Harstad".. I don't know if it's the same guy i'm thinking of (I'm about to check though because the name rings a bell!) but i'm sure its the same bloke who imo, once played a real classic with a very young Carlsen?? If so, iv'e commented before on that game under previous handles iv'e had, and Carlsen sacs 3 pieces before mating him with a Rook and a Bishop!! |
|
| Apr-07-12 | | frogbert: close, mark - but the guy (game) you're thinking of is/was (against) hans krogh harestad. (note the extra 'e'.) also, the first name of the player in dublin is 'christian'. btw, i'm a team mate of hans k. harestad in the "business/corporation league of the oslo area" (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bedri... ) |
|
| Apr-07-12 | | waustad: GM is playing in the challengers section: http://www.e2e4.org.uk/dublin/Apr20... |
|
| Apr-07-12 | | cro777: <Dom> Interestingly, Lithuanian lady and your teammate Pat are leading after three rounds. (Dublin is seeing a Norse invasion in Masters and Lithuanian in Challengers). This time they've given you two whites in succession. Good luck against Valentine! |
|
| Apr-07-12 | | frogbert: <a Norse invasion in Masters> nah... many participants, obviously, but except brede kvisvik (whom i "warned" for some weeks back), the results so far are "normal", although good for the norwegians. 14 players
avg rating: 2074
avg tpr: 2144
avg tpr relative: own rating + 70 points
the irish players in the masters?
23 players (with fide rating)
avg rating: 2135
avg tpr: 2078
avg tpr relative: own rating - 57 points
interesting "mirror" data, but absolutely not sufficient to say anything about irish fide ratings compared to norwegian fide ratings - yet. :o) i'll redo the stats after the end of the event. i assume the differences will be smaller then. |

 | | Domdaniel: Bad day at the office yesterday, as some of you noticed. I managed to lose two non-lost endings. Rook ending vs Bennett, three pawns each. Choise between active and passive defence. I went active and lost. Rook-shuffling draws. Then, next game, I pushed the wrong pawn in a bishop ending. I'll go on. Time for some fiendishly complex middlegames, I think. |
|
| Apr-08-12 | | frogbert: fens of those two endings would be interesting. good luck today! |
|
Apr-08-12
 | | Domdaniel: Forgot to mention: I'm furious with myself, depressed, suffering from (psychosomatic?) head- and tooth- aches and foot cramps in the night. My body's breaking down and my computer isn't so healthy either. Proof, I suppose, that one of us is human.
Back later if I survive another day of this torture. |
|
| Apr-08-12 | | MarkFinan: Hey Dom, iv'e just clicked on the link you provided above, and tried to download the pgn's so i can look at your games, but *it* won't let me..
Either past tourney's or any games from the tourney you're playing in now! Anyway, i don't expect you to answer me right now as i can see you're having a few problems, but good luck for today and your remaining games, take care mate..:) |
|
Apr-08-12
 | | moronovich: Good luck for today <Dom> & good health as well ! |
|
Apr-08-12
 | | Annie K.: <Forgot to mention: I'm furious with myself, depressed [...]> Not much point in that, <G>. :\ Yeah, I know, easy to say, eh. OK, how about "every game is the first game of the rest of your chess career"? ;) |
|
| Apr-08-12 | | frogbert: <tried to download the pgn's so i can look at your games> i think only games from the master section are available, mark. |
|
| Apr-08-12 | | frogbert: congrats on your second win, and even against a fide-rated player, hence counting towards your fide norm. :o) |
|
| Apr-08-12 | | cro777: Passio secundum Gerry.
You have fought well <Dom> under the circumstances. At the Cork Congress Masters you won with the white pieces against Peter J. Lynch. You succeeded again, this time from the other side of the board. |
|
| Apr-08-12 | | waustad: Oh my, my desktop widget clocks are set for home (US-EDT), Dublin, Berlin (same as Stuttgart with the Neckar Open), and Moscow (same as Sochi). Maybe I need to get a life. |

 | | Domdaniel: Monday, probably, 0700, approx. Just walked a mile of gentle soft Irish motorway rain, to find a service station/shop that sold painkillers. Just aspirin, mind. I'm keeping the codeine for emergencies. Though not sleeping last night due to combined head/jaw/tooth and claw pain, plus cramping agony in my legs whenever I was close to dozing off. Therefore, instead of relying on combinations and chemistry, I am now eating a breakfast of scrambled eggs... segg... gegs... eyren. Chess, bleagh. I lose three endings in a row - all of which could've had other results. And then I win a theoretically drawn rook ending with two connected pawns vs one, no passers. Funny old game. I think I'll retire from play until I've sorted the pain problem and immersed myself in Dvoretsky's endgame manual. But I finally got to play a French, which cheered me up -- both of my wins were with black. Now I'd better think of something to play as white in R6. |
|
Apr-09-12
 | | Annie K.: <G> while psychosomatic headaches are entirely believable, toothaches tend not to be psychosomatic. Better look into that. :\ |
|
Apr-09-12
 | | moronovich: <Dom> the COMBINATION of aspirin AND
Ibuprofen/Ipren(dont know the precise word in english) will often do wonders for jaw pain.As it did to user <achieve> a while ago and yours truly too...
Dose is about 1+1 3 times a day.
Good luck in any case ! |
|
Apr-09-12
 | | moronovich: by aspirin I meant ordinary painkillers like paracetamol.perhaps it is the same. |
