   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

May-17-14  dakgootje: Clearly the Snow-berry theorem was thought up during the famous Snowdrops vs Elderberries tournament.

Domdaniel: <Annie> Hmmm. Snow, apart from the 'Two Cultures' debate in the early 1960s, is also the name of (a) a Canadian experimental filmmaker, (b) a character in Tarkovsky's 'Solaris' (pronounced 'Snov') and also in the original book by Lem and Soderberg's remake of the film, (c) a form of H2O.

Berry? Chuck, maybe?

So, um, the Snow-Berry Theorem is code for the Water-Chuck ...?

OK, *Total Word Association Football*, Cruyff Almighty, you win.

I expect the Nederlands to win in Brazil too.

  Annie K.: <Dom: <I'm not omniscient, yanno. Just nearly...>>

Heh, what a coincidence, I keep saying that too. ;p

OK, translation:

<while relatively few literary types understand much about science>

Methinks the underlying cause is sheer snobbery.

The so-called 'literary types' tend to be highly conceited folk, secretly dreading being definitively disproven about anything, which is always a "danger" in actual science.

Not to mention that they also like to fancy themselves above rules, which doesn't sit well with being reminded about inconvenient scientific trivia such as gravity, biochemistry, and suchlike.

So they prefer to pretend that science, as "mere observation of data", is below their great 'artistic' and 'creative' talents. :p

Domdaniel: <A> Er, yes. Quite. I suppose it's possible to *like* science without actually following its precepts ... to like science aesthetically, as it were.

Not much of an argument, though.

May-22-14
Premium Chessgames Member
Domdaniel: Stress? Gaelic doesn't do stress ... too, um, stressful. OK, maybe the middle syllable?
Am-AWR-uch, sounds about right... tho' I'm open to correction from Gaeilgeoiri (ie, speakers of the language!).
May-22-14  nimh: There's nothing to correct here. Unless the definition of a gaeilgeoir excludes non-natives, in that case you can ignore me.

Just be grateful they no longer spell it 'gaedhilgeoiri'...
