| May-17-14 | | dakgootje: Clearly the Snow-berry theorem was thought up during the famous Snowdrops vs Elderberries tournament. |
May-17-14
 | | Domdaniel: <Annie> Hmmm. Snow, apart from the 'Two Cultures' debate in the early 1960s, is also the name of (a) a Canadian experimental filmmaker, (b) a character in Tarkovsky's 'Solaris' (pronounced 'Snov') and also in the original book by Lem and Soderberg's remake of the film, (c) a form of H2O. Berry? Chuck, maybe?
So, um, the Snow-Berry Theorem is code for the Water-Chuck ...? |
May-17-14
 | | Domdaniel: I'm not omniscient, yanno. Just nearly... |
May-17-14
 | | Domdaniel: <dak> Are you trying to *outplay* me in Word Association Football? Have you forgotten that you're, well, *Dutch*? OK, *Total Word Association Football*, Cruyff Almighty, you win. I expect the Nederlands to win in Brazil too. |
May-17-14
 | | Annie K.: <Dom: <I'm not omniscient, yanno. Just nearly...>> Heh, what a coincidence, I keep saying that too. ;p
OK, translation:
<while relatively few literary types understand much about science> Methinks the underlying cause is sheer snobbery.
The so-called 'literary types' tend to be highly conceited folk, secretly dreading being definitively disproven about anything, which is always a "danger" in actual science. Not to mention that they also like to fancy themselves above rules, which doesn't sit well with being reminded about inconvenient scientific trivia such as gravity, biochemistry, and suchlike. So they prefer to pretend that science, as "mere observation of data", is below their great 'artistic' and 'creative' talents. :p |
May-17-14
 | | Domdaniel: <A> -- < secretly dreading being definitively disproven about anything>
No, I'm no po-mo ho... |
May-17-14
 | | Annie K.: Quite... erm, you excluded yourself from the discussed group to start with in any case, by admitting to like science as well. ;) |
May-18-14
 | | Domdaniel: <A> Er, yes. Quite. I suppose it's possible to *like* science without actually following its precepts ... to like science aesthetically, as it were. Not much of an argument, though. |
May-18-14
 | | Annie K.: Can't get a proper argument going these days, eh? ;s |
May-18-14
 | | Domdaniel: Unless I argue with myself, and wind up losing. |
May-18-14
 | | Annie K.: You win some, you lose some... |
May-20-14
 | | Domdaniel: Oh, I lose more than some, My dyah. But the wins, I hope, are significant. |
May-20-14
 | | Annie K.: Heh, I'm sure they are. Btw, check out this book I posted the address to at my forum - the version <Switch> posted should actually work... Good stuff. :) |
May-22-14
 | | Domdaniel: <Annie> The Gaelic word for 'Manana' is 'Amarach', btw. Same meaning. |
May-22-14
 | | Annie K.: Aha - that explains a few things. ;) Useful word. How do you pronounce that? |
May-22-14
 | | Domdaniel: Am-awr-ukh, more or less. |
May-22-14
 | | Annie K.: OK, now just where to put the stress, which syllable? I shouldn't get something this important wrong... :) |
May-22-14
 | | Domdaniel: Stress? Gaelic doesn't do stress ... too, um, stressful.
OK, maybe the middle syllable?
Am-AWR-uch, sounds about right... tho' I'm open to correction from Gaeilgeoiri (ie, speakers of the language!). |
| May-22-14 | | nimh: There's nothing to correct here. Unless the definition of a gaeilgeoir excludes non-natives, in that case you can ignore me. |
May-22-14
 | | Domdaniel: <nimh> Funny, I had a suspicion that this conversation might attract your attention ... welcome back. |
| May-23-14 | | nimh: You have had discussions on Irish earlier, but I have failed to notice on time. This language is indeed one of my interests since 2001. |
May-23-14
 | | Annie K.: Thx. :) As long as I don't have to know how to pronounce Gaeilgeoiri - I think that may be above my pay grade. ;p |
May-23-14
 | | Domdaniel: The first sandbagger? An opponent of Paolo Boi...
<In the suburbs of Barcelona dwelt a very skilful Chess-player; hight Il Mucciaccio, who, by concealing his real strength, and other unworthy stratagems, had won at Chess of Signor Rodriguez a very large sum of money> |
May-23-14
 | | Domdaniel: <Annie> It's Gay-ill-g'yori. Hard g's, and don't worry about the vowels. Just be grateful they no longer spell it 'gaedhilgeoiri'... |
May-23-14
 | | Annie K.: I am, I am... ;s |
