 | | Fusilli: Hi <wannabe>... I hear you are the go-to person for computer questions, and I would appreciate your opinion on this. Two days ago I got an email from New In Chess asking me to renew my subscription, with a link. I clicked on the link, went through the process (entering my credit card info, etc.) and then I got an error message that asked me to try again later. (I didn't yet.) Then yesterday I got an email from New In Chess apologizing that the previous day they gave people an "incorrect link", and asking me to renew my subscription again. This sounds fishy to me. The link was not "incorrect". It worked. I entered all my info and clicked submit and got the error message. Is it possible that they were hacked and I gave my credit card info to a hacker, and New In Chess is trying to deflect responsibility or cover it up with this "incorrect link" thing? Thank you! |

| | WannaBe: <Fusilli> Possible, but however, it is always possible for New In Chess to have made an honest mistake. Do you remember if your subscription was going to run out? (Or did you just took for granted and thought it's running out?) I see that they have nic@newinchess.com for answering questions, give that a shot. And I'd tend to trust that answer. Here is where things get interesting, some of commercial sites, do not run their own credit card transaction(s). It is "Out Sourced" to the likes of PayPal, or other payment company. What I am trying to say, is that New In Chess' payment system/web page address (URL) may be something completely different than what you are used in seeing. I see that on NiC, you can login and then make a payment? And if it humours you, send me the two emails to kstc_jyu@yahoo.com and I can take a closer look. =) I hope this helps. |

| | WannaBe: <Fusilli> If, worst case, that the first email was not from NiC. Contact your credit card company, call them, explain that you believe you are a victim of phishing (pronounced like fishing). Tell them the exact dollar amount, and tell them you thought you were paying New in Chess, but you have a strong feeling that was not the case. Ask them to cancel/send you a new card. Worst case scenario. The credit card will not charge you for the amount you accidentally put on, and cut up the old card and wait for the new card to arrive. |

| | Fusilli: <wannabe> My subscription expires with the third number of 2015 (they issue 8 per year), so it's a little early to ask me to renew, but in my experience magazine subscriptions always ask you super-early to renew. Jesus, when I was subscribed to The New Yorker, I would renew for two years and right away they would start bombarding me to renew for two years more beyond those! Also, I have received an email exactly like the one I got on Friday two years ago--which worked fine. NIC seems to have many different ways to email you! Each message says "New in Chess via" and then a weird email address... but it's always like that. What I wonder is why they said "incorrect link" in yesterday's message. If they made a mistake setting up a payment system that didn't work, they shouldn't blame the link. The link worked, what didn't work was the payment. I'll take you up on your kind offer and forward you some emails from NIC, including the last two. Thank you so much for your help! |

I think, I was fortunate, yes, I always excelled at math and sciences classes, got accepted to UC Davis and LA, plus RPI and Harvey Mudd. But I always hoped it was my accomplishments, not by my race, the major of my choice was considered "impacted". (Math, at Ucla) It wasn't until later that I found out, that Abstract Algebra might as well be Scilian Najdorf that I changed to CompSci. (I remember when HTML was introduced to the world...) been doing CompSci ever since. |

| Feb-23-15 | | Mating Net: A sad, shocking story. I had no idea that sort of thing was taking place. 1. Why would branching out from the chess club be necessary? So few kids play chess I would think an applicant would stand out more. 2. Why would writing an essay on the family journey to the U.S. be taboo? It seems that would go against the whole premise of writing about what shaped an applicant as an individual. I know many families that escaped Vietnam, China and the experience was profound to say the least. 3. I think the name change option mentioned at the end is going to be seen more and more. |

First, we have this student, whose parents make 250K, and she wrote/posted, that her family is middle-class: http://www.businessinsider.in/Unive... Then I read about the new U. of M.'s sporting event ticket price policy for the students, with a tie-in to federal Pell Grant: http://espn.go.com/college-football... So, I wondered, can I buy cheap UM-OSU tickets and sell them to the student, whose family makes 250K? It's scary how far out of touch (with reality) some people are. |

I thought it was well written.her description of one subgroup within silicon valley was accurate. her observation about "pride in clothes" was perceptive. the human response to relative differences; income, IQ, chess rating is quite strong! :-) I would not have said "middle class" but it has punch! I can recommend old San Juan, with El Morro, San Cristobal, etc. A lot of good restaurants there, but let's face it: old San Juan is a place where lots of tourists move around, still a good place to visit. http://gopuertorico.about.com/od/ol... Going to El Yunque National Forest is something to do if you like hiking. (You have to be very careful not to get lost there.)
