Morphy's Blindfold Exhibition at Philadelphia
Compiled by Calli
--*--

Philadelphia - Morphy arrived in Philadelphia on Oct 31, 1859. He played a blindfold echibition at the Academy of Musicn on November 11, 1859. Morphy had decided not to do any more blindfold exhibitions, but made an exception for this charity event. The proceeds went to the Mount Vernon Fund whose sole purpose was to restore and preserve Mt. Vernon, the home of George Washington. "The result was Mr. Tilghman first, then Dr. Lewis, then Mr. Thomas, and, last of all, Mr. Smyth gave in." - Reichhelm in ACM, vol II, page 35. Morphy played many other odds games in Philadelphia, but only two scores against Thomas survive. They are included in this collection.

Baltimore - Abraham B. Arnold was on the reception committee for the Monumental Chess Club. Game published in Bretano's Monthly 1882?. Later Dr. Arnold became President of the Baltimore Chess Association. He is the author of a "Manual of Nervous Diseases".
