US Open 1964, Boston
Compiled by Phony Benoni
--*--

The 65th US Open was held at the Sheraton Plaza Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts from August 16-28, 1964. Pal Benko captured his second title in a field of 229 (234 according to some source), finishing one point ahead of Miro Radojcic, Robert Byrne, and James Sherwin.

The tournament basically came down to the 10th-round clash between Benko and Byrne. In a tie for first with their two closest pursuers playing a draw, they chose risky play and Byrne went a bit too far.

Benko won in part by channeling his Inner Bobby Fischer, winning his first two games by play 1.e4 and waiting an hour for his opponents to not show up. Benko was forced to play a Real Live uman Being in round 3, and took 23 tedious moves to win.

Radojcic was the surprise of the tournament. Rated 2165 coming in, he scored an undefeated 9.5-2.5 including a win over William Lombardy and draws with Benko, Byrne and Sherwin.

Special recognition goes to Harlow B. Daly, who first played in the Western Championship in 1904!

Games were played at 7:00 PM each evening, with the exception of round 7 on August 23 at 3:00 PM; adjournments were continued the next morning. Saturday, August 22, was an off day reserved for the US Open Speed Champinship, won by William Lombardy. Georges Koltanowski was the tournament director.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to find any crosstable for this tournament, or even a complete list of participants. Instead, known players will be listed in alphabetical order, with results and prizes where available.

To compile the following, I have used"Chess Life", "Chess Review", daily reports in the "New York Times", the Boston Globe, a file of games from Andy Ansel, and various fragmentary Internet accounts. Any additional information will be most welcome; please leave a note for me at User: Phony Benoni or the Biographer Bistro.

Additional games

The following games were supplied by Andy Ansel, many transcribed from the scoresheets and records of Harlow Bussey Daly, Ariel Mengarini (courtesy of John Hilbert), Orest Popovych, and Denis Strenzwilk.

Without a complete crosstable, it can be difficult to judge the authenticity of games. The following three games are attributed to the 1964 US Open in some databases, but I am not sure they were played in the tournament. I will hold off submitting them until further information is found.

Richard Green - Erich Watkinson Marchand: 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 dxc4 5.a4 Bf5 6.e3 e6 7.Bxc4 Bb4 8.0-0 Nbd7 9.Qe2 Ne4 10.Bd2 Nxd2 11.Nxd2 0-0 12.e4 Bg6 13.f4 Nb6 14.Qe3 Nxc4 15.Nxc4 f6 16.Rad1 Re8 17.e5 Bc2 18.Ra1 f5 19.Rf2 Bb3 20.Nd2 Bd5 21.Nxd5 Qxd5 22.Nb3 Red8 23.Qf3 Rd7 24.Rd1 Qxf3 25.Rxf3 c5 26.Rc1 cxd4 27.Rd3 Rad8 28.Rc4 Bf8 29.Kf1 g5 30.g3 gxf4 31.gxf4 Bh6 32.Rf3 d3 33.Nd2 Rd4 34.Rc7 Bxf4 35.Ke1 Rxa4 36.Rh3 Ra1+ 37.Kf2 h6 38.Rxb7 Bxd2 39.Rg3+ Bg5 40.h4 d2 41.hxg5 h5 0-1 (Green does not appear in sources, or in the October 1964 rating supplement covering the US Open.)

Miroslav Radojcic - Azirovic : 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Nxe4 6.d4 b5 7.Bb3 d5 8.dxe5 Be6 9.c3 Be7 10.Be3 0-0 11.Nbd2 Nxd2 12.Qxd2 Na5 13.Bc2 Nc4 14.Qd3 g6 15.Bh6 Re8 16.Nd4 Qd7 17.f4 c5 18.Nxe6 Qxe6 19.f5 Qxe5 20.Rae1 Qd6 21.fxg6 hxg6 22.Qf3 f5 23.Bxf5 gxf5 24.Re6 Qc7 25.Qxf5 Source: Undated Koltanowski column. Unsure if game is actually from US Open. Azirovic does not appear in rating supplement covering the US Open, or in the 1964 Annual Rating List. 1-0 (Azirovic does not appear in sources, or in the October 1964 rating supplement covering the US Open.)

John Curdo - RObert Iappini: 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 Nf6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nf3 d5 5.exd5 Nxd5 6.0-0 Be7 7.Re1 Nc6 8.Nxd4 0-0 9.Bxd5 Qxd5 10.Nxc6 Qxd1 11.Nxe7+ 1-0 (Iappini does not appear in sources, or in the October 1964 rating supplement covering the US Open. In addition, Curdo's name is not mentioned in sources, which would be very unusual for a player of his strength and local prominence.)

The following game is incomplete. As the result is not clear in the final position, I will not submit it to the general database unless a fuller score becomes available.

Sam Sloan - Peter Lapiken (Round uncertain): 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.d4 exd4 5.Nd5 Nxe4 6.Qe2 f5 7.Ng5 d3 8.cxd3 Nd4 9.Qh5+ g6 10.Qh4 c6 11.dxe4 cxd5 12.exf5 And ♗lack won in a few more moves. Source: Sloan e-mail 0-1
