Marshall - Johnston match (1899-00)

Match conditions as given in the Chicago Tribune, December 14th 1899, p.14:

<1. The stakes to be $100 a side.

2. The games of the match to be played in the rooms of the Chicago Chess and Checker Club, Chicago, Ill.

3. The winner of the first seven games, draws not counting, to be declared the winner of the match.

4. The hours of play to be from 7 to 12 o'clock P.M.

5. Games to be played every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

6. Each player to be entitled to two bye days.

7. The time limit to be thirty-five moves for the first two hours and eighteen moves each hour thereafter.

8. The games to be free to the press and the members of the Chicago Chess and Checker Club and their friends.

9. Each player shall keep his own score and take care of his clock.>

The Chicago Tribune, December 24th, added:

Adjourned games to be finished Dec. 25, Jan. 1, and thereafter every Wednesday. Rules, American Chess code. Referee, Harry F. Lee.

The Chicago Tribune, December 31st, announced: <There will be an intermission of a week in the Johnston-Marshall match. The Brooklyn champion leaves here tonight for a visit of four days to Davenport, where he will give exhibitions of simultaneous and single games against the best chess talent in Davenport, Rock Island and Moline. The next game of the match is scheduled for Saturday evening.>

However, on January 1st, p.9, the paper reversed itself: <Mr. Marshall will not go to Davenport until next week, and the games of the match will be continued during the week on schedule sic time.>

Marshall's trip duly took place after game 13.
