Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-30-11  DrMAL: This game caught my eye because it has the same position after 9.Qe2 as in Shirov vs Topalov, 1998 after 9.f4 there. Topalov moved 9...Be7 whereas black played 9...b5 here. I think Shirov's 10.e5 was better here 10.g4 is quite loosening and black has not castled yet so the target is not there. Maybe 11.a3 or 11.Be3 and castling Q-side would have been more consistent than 11.O-O as well. Similarly, 13.a4 seemed overextending. At first 15...g6 looked dubious to prevent f5 but after 16...h6 black's plan is clear. Meantime white used a tempo resurrecting the knight. After 20.Qxb2 black has some advantage with the extra pawn but I think 20...Bf6 or 20...Qd8 was better.

21.Na5 was best in the absence of 20...Qd8 but slower 21.Nd2 was played to defend as well. After 25...Rxg5+ correct was 26.Ng4 (an exchange sac is easily defended) 26.Bg4?! was inaccurate allowing 26..Re5 (or 26...Qe5 maybe even better). Here, maybe 27.Rfd1 to attack the d6 pawn was best, 27.Nd3? was a blunder because 28.Qh8+ does not do anything white has no attack. I guess 30.Nf5 was a desperation attempt (more obvious 30.Rxf7 also fails) white was lost from here. 30...Nxe6 was fine maybe 30...dxc5 proves the point even more. Great game by black in keeping cool, classic case of overextension.
