  Telemus: Black was completly winning, but after 23.♕d5 it needed courage:

23.. c6? allowed mate. 23.. ♗d2! would have stopped the attack and won the game. (23.. ♘d4! is also winning, but more complicated (24.♕xd4 b6).)

  sachistu: For what it's worth, Sergeant's book (Charousek's Games of Chess) page 159, evidently erroneously listed the location as Berlin January, 22nd, 1897. Sergeant referred to it as a 'skittles' game in the Casual Games section of his book.

Ceske Listy Sachove 1897 p.38 lists February 22 (as pointed out by <Jean Defuse> on the Charousek page. <CLS> stops after 23...c6?, saying White mates in 3. Both Sergeant and <CLS> used only the intials 'K.V'.
