  IMlday: He thought a very long time on 15.0-0-0?!. 15.a4 looks a bit better for White. When he had analyzed he assumed Black would play 19..Bf7(?) when he prepared 20.Nxf5! Bxh5 21.Nxd6+ and White gets good compensation for the exchange. However by simply inverting the move order Black wins a piece. Now 20..Bf7 threatens to trap the Q, and on 20.Nxf5 Black just takes it and the other Knight hangs.

  refutor: i prefer 4. ...Bxc3+ as in B Pel vs L Day, 2001 IM Day, will you be playing in the Canadian Closed in Toronto this year or the Guelph International?

  IMlday: refutor, After 4..Bxc3+ 5.bxc3
(a) 5..Qa5 6.Qd4 Nf6 7.Qb4 Nc6! (Lein)the game will probably be drawn. But if Black is happy with a draw, what is he doing in a wild Pterodactyl? Hence:
(b) 5..Bxc3+ 6.bxc3 Nf6 7.e5 Ne4;
then there is 8.Bc4 as in Stripunsky-Day, Toronto International, 2000 (not much for White) and 8.Bd3!? as in Noritsyn-Day, Active, Todd Southam Memorial, Toronto, 2004. After 7..Nxc5 8.Nf3 Nc6 9.0-0 Qa5 10.Re1 b6 11.Bd2 Ba6 12.Qe2 I played 12..0-0? which got torn apart by the straight-forward 13.c4 Qa4 14.Bh6 Rfe8 15.h4 with an enormous attack. (1-0,23)

Hard line to evaluate, especially in a thirty-minute game. Presumably Black's King should go long.. got improvements?

I may play the Canadian Zonal in Toronto in August, less likely the Guelph International (though for an aspiring player it is a great edu opportunity). A lot depends on health and finances, two unknown variables. The Zonal would be fun, and nostalgic, but $200 is a steep entry fee with my likelihood of prize money not especially realistic.

  IMlday: Whoops, move numbers are off
in line (b), should be 5..Nf6 6.e5 Ne4 etc.
Note (c) 7.Qd4? is dumb after Qa5.
Dec-10-04  drukenknight: Very sneaky, Mr. Day. BUt surely Mestel missed 20 Bxb4. Did you have a response for that?

  IMlday: 20.Bxb4 is a try but after ..Bf7 21.Bxd6+ Ke8 22.Nc7+ Qxc7 23.Bxc7 Bxh5 Black is still a piece up.
Apr-08-10  birthtimes: Regarding Noritsyn-Day, Active, Todd Southam Memorial, Toronto, 2004, howz about 14...Rfc8 15.h4 Na5! thereby putting pressure on White's c4 pawn?!
Apr-08-10  birthtimes: Also in Noritsyn-Day, 9...d5 10.Bh6 Be6 seems better, due to a stronger central development and control...
