Kibitzer's Corner
May-01-10  Don Cossacks: Nice crisp tactics by Geller here.
Sep-12-10  Xeroxx: Amazing what can happen if black takes exg5.
Sep-12-10  whiteshark: Good question!
Sep-12-10  shatranj7: If 18...hxg5, then 19.fxg5. The immediate threat is 20.Qh4!, when black cannot defend with f5 because of en passant. Therefore, in my assessment, black's most sound line of defense would be 19...g6. Then white has 20.Rf6!! (Exchange sac yields compensation in the form of a strong initiative and total demolition of black's castle, due to the coordination of white's pieces). A potential line would be 20...Bxf6. 21.gxf6 Nxf6 [21...Bc6. 22.Qh4!] 22.Bxg6! fxg6 [what else?] 23.Qxg6+ [Mate in 1].

tamar: In that case, this game would change to "♖♘sac: 20.Rf6"

18...hxg5 19 fxg5 Qd8 20 Rf6

I wanted to check if the rook sacrifice was sound, and Rybka confirms after a long think.

20...Bxf6 21 gxf6 b4 (21...Qa5 22 Qh6 Rc4 23 Bxg6) 22 Qh6 Bb5 23 Bxb5 with mate in 8

Sep-14-10  Xeroxx: hxg5 19. Qh3 g6 20. f5!!

Then black has had it.

Sep-14-10  whiteshark: <18...hxg5 19.Qh3 g6 20.Qh6!!> with the idea of 21.f5 is the killr line

Dec-05-11  Whitehat1963: "22. Rxf7! Now that ought to shut your yap for a while!"
