Jul-06-06  monad: Googling for <novelties created by Timman>, I came across this a snippet: by ROBERT BYRNE published: September 19, 1993 on the above game.

"Timman, a Dutch grandmaster, surprised Karpov on Move 10 of a Queen's Gambit Declined. The novelty, with Timman playing the black pieces, involved the sacrifice of a knight for no immediate compensation. In the complex, fluid sequence that followed, Timman finally won the piece back and Karpov went on to stabilize the position and insure a draw. "

I wondered if move ...10 might make a daily puzzle.
Personally, I would have expected 10....0-0, with an advantage to White. Was this a worthwhile innovation? It's been played about twenty times since, although it never did Karpov any harm to have it played against him.

plang: Seems like black wins the knight back after ..12 a6 so I'm not sure what is meant by "the sacrifice of a knight for no immediate compensation".

This is a very sharp tactical line that often leads to complications.

Timman used this line three times during this WC match. He lost the other two games.

Jul-01-09  Knight13: <Timman used this line three times during this WC match. He lost the other two games.> Thanks. Won't try this in real life, then.
