Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-23-08  The Chess Express: After 5. e4 Qb6! I’m convinced that both 6. Rb1 and 6. Na4 Qa5+ 7. c3 Qc7! are dubious for white. If white wishes to make a gambit out of the opening then 6. Qd2!? is worth a try. After Qxb2 7. Rb1 Qa3 8. Bd3 white may have enough.

Probably the “correct” reply is 6. a3 when something like Be7 7. e5 Ng8 8. Bxe7 Nxe7 9. Na4 Qa5+ 10. c3 Ng3 11. Nh3 may give white a plus. Black can also play 6...c5 when 7. Na4 Qa5+ 8. c3 c4 9. b4 Qc7 10. e5 Nfd7 11. f4 offers white a simple space advantage. Note that 6. b3? Bb4! 7. Nge2 dxe4 gives black the advantage.

Jan-23-08  The Chess Express: I guess 6. a3 c5 7. Na4 Qa5+ 8. c3 c4 9. b4 cxb3 is a better try. Now 10. Qxb3 Nc6! creates unpleasant threats against white’s d4. If the gambit option proves to be unsound then it may be best to transpose into the French with 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. f3 e6 4. Nc3 Nf6 5. e5 ... f4 etc. Opening Explorer

As far as the Veresov move order is concerned 1. d4 Nf6 2. Nc3 d5 3. Bg5 c6 4. Qd3 to meet Qb6 with 5. 0-0-0 looks ok. Opening Explorer
