Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-03-11  DrMAL: Athough played earier (and won by black) in T Van Scheltinga vs Gruenfeld, 1936 and used often by Junge (e.g., Lehmann vs K Junge, 1942), this very complicated variation was made popular by Botvinnik particularly in 1945 USSR vs USA radio match Denker vs Botvinnik, 1945 where its basic ideas including long castle are shown.

Computer line after 11...Bb7 was given in Kasparov vs G Timoshchenko, 1981 repeated here.

Move 12.h4! immediately giving back pawn was introduced in this game. But it deviates with 12...Qb6 a good alternative to more complicated 12...Nxf6 (Qa5 also good). After 13.a4 probably best was long castle or Bb4, 13...b4 was inaccurate because of 14.a5! attacking Q. Here, position was sharp and black made a subtle but fatal blunder.

Korchnoi's tactical eye was laser-like as usual, one does not get away with moves like 14...Qa6? around him!
