Jul-24-23  generror: This seems to be the very first time the Schara-Hennig gambit was played. It's kinda funny that Marshall is White, because that kind of idea would be typical for him.

The gambit has often been advertised as being a super dangerous killer opening, but I'm not really convinced. Yes, Black can get the white queen to make an absurd number of moves, back on forth on the d-file, but that's about it. Black gets a slight lead in development, but I don't think they get enough compensation for the pawn. However, on club level, it may still be better than playing the main line which in my opinion doesn't give Black any chance of signicant counterplay.

Sally Simpson: You are correct, it's a good club level opening or Mid-week league match where a player has done a full days work, grabbed a quick tea and off to play chess.

Although I worked full time, nobody ever got a full days work out of me. I was busy doing nothing till 4pm and if i had a league game that night I'd do even less.

The Schara-Hennig served me well, G Morrison vs G Chandler, 1987 then I kept meeting the London System long before it became fashionable. No more 1..d5's and back to the KID.

Very, very wise xD Wish I'd have had that attitude 20 years ago.
