An Englishman: Good Evening: How curious that a first round game should decide a sixteen round tournament. If Duras had won, he would taken first prize.

Marshall being Marshall, he had to have his fun; 8.Nxe5 would have ended the game rather quickly. The game does turn into an interesting R & P v. B & N endgame in which the mad attacker demonstrates his perhaps underrated skill in that phase of the game.

Position after 52.Ra5+. Duras' king is in a mating net. But after 52....Kg6, White has a stalemating resource: 53.Rg5+ and if 53....Kh6, 54.Rxh5+, or if 53....Kh7, 54.Rxg7+. Marshall would have to play 53...Kf6, surrendering the h-pawn, with a tough winning task ahead.

So Marshall plays 52....Ne5 instead, and after 53.Ra3(?) g5! 54.hxg5 Ng4

The same mating net, but now there is no stalemate resource and mate cannot be avoided. A nice trick to pull against a problemicist.

Apr-10-19  RookFile: I appreciate the comment about Marshall having fun. Had the same impression - this game has a sense of humor to it.
Apr-10-19  sudoplatov: Stockfish (the one under the diagram) doesn't see improvement for White after 52...Ne5.

Nice tournament result for Marshall. He did have his good tournaments during the early 1900s.

perfidious: Yes, such as his win at Cambridge Springs 1904, ahead of Lasker.
