plang: Current thoery says that 14 Na4 gives white a solid positional advantage which is one of the reasons the Tarrasch is currently out of favor. White overestimates the impact of 29 Qh7. Blacks K is more secure than whites. The combination of the passed d pawn and the vulnerable white K eventually bring Nunn victory.

perfidious: <plang> Some background on this game: Nikolac needed 3/4, including this game, for a grandmaster norm, with his remaining games being against one of the local players, Miles and Jansa.

In Secrets of Grandmaster Play, co-author Peter Griffiths hypothesises that this is why he chose some riskier options than he might otherwise have done. If I'd had to face Miles and Jansa, hard to imagine beating both of them at the time, even if I were one of the greatest players of the late 1970s.

After this loss, Nikolac proceeded to win the last three rounds for the title.
