plang: Nunn resurrects 4 h4 which Tal played against Botvinnik and is rarely played anymore. The disadvantage of 4..c5 is that black has to be constantly vigilant of having his bishop trapped. 4..h6 and 4..h5 are the main lines. Nunn is most well known for playing with the initiative but in this game he takes material, defends actively and ultimately prevails although blacks counterplay looks quite dangerous at several points. Nunn's king sure looks vulnerable after 24 Kb4 but Nunn had seen that there was no way continue the attack and that his threats were even more dangerous.
Sep-18-12  Conrad93: According to Nunn, 8...d4 fails to 9.Bxb7! Kc7 10.e6!fxe6 11.Qf3 Qxc5 12.Ba6 and white wins.

Taking the knight leads to 13.Qb7+ Kd6 14.Bf4+ e5 15.0-0-0+ Ke6 16.Rxd8 exf4 17.Qd7+! Kf6 18.Rxf8+ Kg6. An easy win for white.

Sep-18-12  Conrad93: Nunn was using an old Fritz engine when he checked this, so it was bound to make some errors.

Taking the bishop is the best continuation:
