Honza Cervenka: Pretty excitintg fight. Black seemed to be in full control of events around move 25 but white found resources for counterplay that quickly turned the table.

Black still has the better chances, writes Donner in the tournament book.

Even after 34... fxe6? the game may not have been lost. Donner advocates 37... Bxd4 38.Nxe6+ Rxe6 39.Qxe6 Bxb2

when it's not clear if White can win. A similar position would appear after 37... Rf1+ 38.Kg2 Rf2+ 39.Kh3 Bxd4 etc.

It took Polu a lot of bad moves to lose a hopelessly won position.

Black seemed to be in full control of events around move 25 but white found resources for counterplay that quickly turned the table.> I'd place the turning point at move 23. White has sacked a pawn for pressure and black has to be very precise. 23..Bg7, getting the bishop into safety looks best at once. Then maybe 0-0 could be the next goal. I'd prefer black at this point. Instead, 23..b4? frees the queen knight for mischief and after 25.Re3 white has a deadly queen/rook battery on the e-file. I'm a fan of the fianchetto system against 6.f4 and hate to see black lose this theoretical argument, but kudos to Sax for seizing his chance!
Apr-07-22  areknames: <It took Polu a lot of bad moves to lose a hopelessly won position.> Yes, and after 32...Rfd8! White could resign; the resource Ne6 is no longer available as Polu has ...Rc1. They say you always move the wrong rook...In any event, very enjoyable game.
