Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-06-05  Caissanist: When David Levy annotated this game he called it (tongue very much in cheek) "an example of sound, classical chess (as defined by Suttles)". Levy seemed to think that white had the better of it out of the opening, before losing his way in the middlegame. I even tried this opening myself in a few tournament games, with decent results

Looking at it now, though, it seems to me that white's opening simply leaves him a pawn down with a cramped position, and that the rest is basically technique on black's part. Oh well, at least it still has surprise value.

Apr-07-05  Gregor Samsa Mendel: I have a hazy memory of the notes to this game. As I recall, they were <very> tongue-in-cheek. Levy criticized black's 4...e7-e5 and recommended removing black's d-pawn as a target by playing 4...d5-d7!

Phony Benoni: The only quote I can remember from Levy's article, though not what move it was attached to, was, "Oh, dear Lothar! You fall for everything!"

Is there another game between grandmasters where a rook moves to a2/h2 by move 4? Must look this up.

Oct-20-15  Howard: Oh, yes, I remember a few of Levy's notes to this game. He actually called 1...d5 a mistake because it "prematurely" committed Black's queen pawn.

Ha, ha, ha !
