Chessical: An extremely brave fighting game by Gligoric who risked his K against Larsen's active pieces.

13.Kd3. All theory to here, 13.Kd1 is the alternative.

Short vs Minic, 1985

14.d5! Opening up the way for his Q bishop.

16...Qxf5 17.Qxf5 Nxf5 18.e6 Rad8 19.exf7+ Kh8 20.c4 and Black is worse.

17.e6!? Wanting more than 17.g4!? Ne7 18.Qxg6 hxg6 19.Bxb7² Rfd8+

21...h6!? 22.g4 Bb4 23.gxf5 hxg5 seems okay for Black, but he is more ambitious.

23...Rfxf7 was later given as an improvement.

After 29...Kg8!? 30.Bxd6 Bxd6 31.Kd3 bxc4+ 32.bxc4 White is still better.

34...Qg8?? loses 34...Rd3+ was much better 35.Bxd3 cxd3 36.Bxg7+ Kg8 37.Kxd3 Qb5+ 38.Kc3 Qc6+ 39.Kd3 Qd5+ 40.Kc3 Rf2

35.Nf8!! also wins nicely, 35...Ra6 (35...Rd6 36.Bxh7) 36.Bxh7 Qd5 37.Ng6+ Rxg6 38.Bxg6+ Kg8 39.Qh7+ Kf8 40.Qh8+ Qg8 41.Bb4+ Re7+ 42.Bxe7+ Kxe7 43.Qxg8 Kd6 44.Qc8 Kd5 45.Qc7 Ke6 46.Bf7+ Kf5 47.Qf4 mate

39.Nf7+ Kg8 40.gxh7+ Kf8 41.h8(Q) mate

An Englishman: Good Evening: After going over this game, I feel like one of the Gumby characters from Monty Python's Flying Circus--"Oh, me brain hurts!"
Apr-23-11  BobCrisp: Wicked slugfest. Like going 12 rounds at <McDonalds>.
Oct-08-16  zydeco: I don't think I've ever seen a middlegame like this - the king marches to the center and is used to help support white's pieces. The reasonable-looking 13.Kd1 is a completely viable alternative.

The computer has black better for most of the middlegame. The tide turns with 27....Qe7?! instead of 27...Qf5.

The computer agrees with chessical's notes: 34....Rd3+ saves it. 35.Nf8!! wins.

Chessical: <NM JRousselle> "Chessical, when was this "all theory here?"

Fair enough, it would have been better to stay that the moves up to move 13 became established theory.

Aug-22-25  ColdSong: Gligoric was often ready to play bravely, with stunning ideas quite far and hidden, but was he really a beast in opening preparation? I'm not sure, and it's even more impressive.
