Korora: I was barking up the completely wrong tree. I thought that thirteenth move was a ♕-sac. Well, I am a patzer of all trades, master of none where the chaturanga family is concerned.
Jan-01-25  King.Arthur.Brazil: The king thought about 13...Rd8 but in view of the answer 14. Qg5, it would seem that W could have good defense. I didn't like 14. hxg4 although the position either didn't seem so catastrophic to W in the following moves. Happy new year, everybody!.

Wednesday? Fuhgettaboutit
Jan-01-25  mel gibson: I didn't see that.
Stockfish 17 chose that as well but says it's close to a draw or actually losing:

13. .. Rd8

(13. .. Rd8 (1. ... Rd8 2.Bxg4 Bxg4 3.hxg4 Bxb2 4.g5 Qg6 5.Nxb2 Rxd2 6.Bxd2 Qxe4 7.Nd3 Qa4 8.Rfc1 b6 9.Bf4 c5 10.Kg1 Re8 11.a3 Qd7 12.g3 c4 13.Ne1 Qf5 14.Ng2 h6 ) -0.67/48 246)

score for Black -0.67 depth 48.

Jan-01-25  vajeer: Happy New Year!
I saw the combination. Rd8 is kind of obviuos given the lack of options. Feels like 14. White to play may be a better puzzle choice. 14.Bxg4 prevents Qh4+
Jan-01-25  vajeer: Also white needs to see 16.g5 before playing 14. Bxg4. 16. g5 prevents both Qh4+ and Qh6+ looks simple but maybe difficult to find on the board. That's why I feel 14. ? White to play would have been a good puzzle.

Willber G: The engine gives 13...Rd8 with +0.18 in favour of white. The puzzle is trying to work out why this position was chosen.
Jan-01-25  Hercdon: I agree with Mel
Jan-01-25  alshatranji: I understand that the puzzle is about guessing the best move under all circumstances. But, for the most part, I don't come here for subtle transitional moves. I want to see something creative and, yes, entertaining. Is that asking too much? Willber G is right on.
Jan-02-25  Rosbach: I found this but I wasn't thinking it would be enough to win the game. ...Rd8 14. hxg4 Qh4+ 15. Kg1 Be5 16. g3 Rxd2 17. gxh4
