Feb-12-05  bishopmate: can anyone tell me whats wrong with 11...Nxc4?
Feb-12-05  Troewa: <bishopmate> I don't think there's anything wrong with it. It just doesn't really lead to anything after White plays 12. Qa4+ to get the minor piece back.
Sep-22-05  Jaymthetactician: Isnt the evans refuted? why did a computer play this?
Sep-22-05  psmith: <Jaymthetactician> "why did a computer play this?"

Ummm... because it was programmed to?

Sep-22-05  Swapmeet: <Jaymthetactician> Would you be so kind as to go over the Evans page and demonstrate a refutation? Though I don't think you will, since you just read that in a book somewhere and automatically assume its true.
Sep-22-05  midknightblue: <Jaym, Swap> Swap seems to be suggesting that the Evan's is not refuted, and I believe he is correct. I admit that I lose my share of Evan's gambit games from the white side, and occasionally need to refer back to one of my Evan's Books after the game to see where I went wrong, but I think there is no absolute refutation at this point. At least not for the following line... 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.b5 Bxb4 5.c3 Ba5 (or alternatively, of course 5...Bc4 or Be7). 6 (if Ba5)Qb3 (as recommended by Michael Rohde) 6...Qe7 or Qf6. If anyone has a line that they feel refutes this please post it, so that I can look into it further. Admittedly, I may need to refer to notes or one of my books to find the best line. I have Rohde's "the great evans gambit debate" and pinski's "Italian Game and Evans gambit." Incidentally, Timothy Harding, author of two books on the Evans, is the author who is the closest to suggesting that the Evan's gambit is unsound. I dont think he has been bold enough to actually describe it as "refuted."
