Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-04-06   blingice: Its generally not good when your opponent has gained back material and your king is on the fifth rank and he has two passed pawns. This is a very nice tactic by Morphy, even though it is common.
Apr-09-08   JimmyVermeer: In Philip Sergeant's book, he claims that Maurian's 23rd move was better than Nc6+. This is incorrect. Maurian's move lost the game, and Nc6+ would have drawn. 23 Nc6+ bxc6+ 24 Kxc6 Qc8 25 Qb5+ Ka7 26 Qb6+ Ka8 27 Qa5+ Kb8 28 Qb5+ Ka7 29 Qb6+ Ka8 30 Qa5+ Kb8 (draw). Can anyone find a flaw in this analysis? Maurian's 25th move was also a mistake. He should have tried Kc4. Morphy missed a faster mate a couple of times in the end, too. A much better ending would have been:
25 Qc3 Rxd5 26 Qc5 Rxc5+ 27 Kxc5 Bd6+ 28 Kc4 Qg2 29 Rf8+ Bxf8 30 Kc3 Qc6+ 31 Kd2 Bb4+ 32 Kc1 Bd3+ 33 Kd1 Qc2#
Jan-01-09   WhiteRook48: interesting should go into "King Hunts" collection.
"Tis the season to beat Maurian, fa la la la la la la la la." "and with a deflection and check, fa la la la la la la la la."
