Jun-05-04  poktirity: What's the finish?
Jun-05-04  Swindler: Mate on g7 or loss of the rook will follow.
Jun-05-04  poktirity: I'm so stupid =)
Jun-10-04  filipecea: 31...Rxe6 looks like a necessary move, but what consequences would black faces if 31...Bxf4?
Jun-10-04  acirce: <filipecea> He would lose his bishop after 32. Rf1. 32. Qh5 also seems quite good. Or 32. gxf6 gxf6 33. Qg4+
Jun-10-04  filipecea: Perhaps 32.♕h5 ( threatening mate by 33.♕xh7 ♔f7 34.♕xg7# ) 32...g6 33.♗xg6 ♖e7 34.gxf6 ♕g2 35.f7+ ♖xf7 36.♗xf7+ ♔h8
Jun-10-04  filipecea: <acirce> Black shouldn't take back the pawn at f6 (32. gxf6 gxf6) because it would invite 33.Qg4+ like you said, and thus the only manner to avoid mate would be 33...Bg5 losing the bishop anyway.
Jun-10-04  filipecea: After 32.gxf6 whatever Black moves it must face fatal threats!! I was thinking in lines such as 32...Rf8 but White answers with the striking 33.Rf1 Qxh5 34.Rxf4
Mar-25-24  Allderdice83: Got this one in a few seconds. 38. e7
Mar-25-24  Mayankk: Beautiful and simple. Best way to start a Monday. Even better that it is an Anand game.

White Queen wants to mate via Qg7# but the Black Queen is playing spoilsport. However she is also X-raying the c8 Black Rook, also protected by the Black Queen. That means Black Queen may be overloaded.

We combine these two themes by the simple interference move 38 e7. Now if 38 ... Qxe7, then 39 Qxc8+ Qf8 40 Qxf8+ Bxf8 and White is a Rook up. Else 39 Qg7# beckons.

  PawnSac: e7 is a total shut-down.

takebackok: Those were the days, easy think Monday.
Mar-25-24  King.Arthur.Brazil: I bet someone will claim that this is not a Monday potd. Hey, it is quite simple: 38. e7... if captures with Q, 39.Qxc8+ with an extra♖, otherwise 39. Qg7+... very easy!

Check It Out: 38.e7 and the kingdom come crumbling down.
Mar-25-24  mel gibson: I saw that but I was looking for a mate in 1 or mate in 2 with a Queen sac, as it's a Monday.

Stockfish 16 says - White wins_ mate in 16.

38. e7

(38. e7 (1.e7 Qxe7 2.Qxc8+ Qf8 3.Qb7 Be7 4.Re1 Qg7 5.Qxe7 Qxe7 6.Rxe7 f5 7.Bxf5 h6 8.Rd7 Kg8 9.c3 Kf8 10.b3 Kg8 11.c4 bxc4 12.bxc4 a5 13.c5 a4 14.c6 a3 15.c7 Kf8 16.c8Q+) +M16/70 168)

Korora: I was barking up the wrong tree because it's usually a sac on Mondays, while this time the apparent ♕ sac would have been a colossal blunder.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Literally a problem move--specifically, "interference."

gawain: I broke through on this one when I understood that the win did not have to be a mate but might be only a big win of material.
Mar-25-24  saturn2: 38. e7 threatens Qg7 and if Qxe7 39.Qxc8
Mar-25-24  stacase: Pushing the Pawn threatens mate and Black’s only defense loses the Rook. Took a few seconds to see.
Mar-25-24  jffun1958: White x-rays the Rc8 with the Qg4 and could mate, if g7 were unprotected.
38. e7!! and mate in 10:
38...Qxe7 39.Qxc8+ Qf8 40.Qf5 Qf7 41.h5 Be7 42.h6 Bf8 43.Rg7 Qxg7 44.hxg7+ Kg8 45.Qxh7+ Kf7 46.g8=Q+ Ke8 47.Qhf7+ Kd8 48.Qgxf8#
Mar-25-24  TheaN: e7 and Rc8 falls with mate soon. Not a typical Monday but on the same level.

chrisowen: Elk v jufa x its z e7 its off duh its axiom juggle bee its ye e7 lab
Mar-25-24  paavoh: I have seen the game before, so 38.e7 was too familiar. Good explanation by <Mayankk>.
Mar-25-24  Halldor: The Black Queen is overworked and cannot defend the g7 square against the mate threat and the Rook on c8 at the same time. So this beautiful interference move, 38 e7, decides the game, it's curtains for Black.
