JohnBoy: Would the finale be 41.d6 Kf6 42.Rh7 a4 43.d7 a3 44.d8Q Rxd8 45.Rxh6+ Ke5 (for example) 46.Ra6 ? It seems that white has to play a bit more precisely than black here.

plang: Game 4 of the match that Kasparov won 4-2 winning games 2 and 3. Kasparov had reached the position after 16..Rfc8 several times in his early matches with Karpov playing both Black and White. 17..Rab8 was new; 17..Bxb5 had been played in Eingorn - Lputian Sochi 1985. After 21 Rxd4..Ne6 followed by ..d4 Black would have been at least equal. 21..g6! kicked the White queen off of d5. After 28 h4? Timman had to work for the draw; 28 d6 would have been stronger.Timman had originally intended 29 Rd4 but then noticed that 29..Rc4 is very strong for Black. If 34 d6?..e3!; an example of the pitfalls Timman had to avoid.
Jun-04-11  Snakebite: 19 exd4? Does seem to restrict the black knight. Is Ba8 and Nb6-c4 the way to go?
