LIFE Master AJ: # 1.) This is a VERY interesting chess game. (Compared to some of the other extremely dull, routine draws that were played at this same event.)

# 2.) I DON'T think this is a Pirc, it is more like a Modern Defense. (A very similar line, but an entirely different opening system. In the true Pirc, Black's KN is almost always developed to f6.) MCO calls this the Robatsch/Ufimtsev system. (I also have about 10 - or more - books on the Pirc. This line is in ... none of them!!)

# 3.) I spent about 2-3 hours looking at this game - without the help of a computer - right after it was played. It was not at all obvious what the losing move was here. (Although the Knight sack - by Black - on e5 has to be wrong.) Black does a lot of the "typical" (if you can really call it that), stuff that the second player normally does in this opening.

Aug-18-04  clocked: You may want to check out Martin v Bermejo 1993 which has the same position after Rb1 and again after Bxf3.

Black may have tried 15... Qd8 to save the tempo lost to Rc1. Also, black is fine after 16.c4 Nc6 17.b5 Ne7 18.cxd5 Nxd5 19.Qxd4 Qa5+ 20.Kf2 Rd8 21.Rhd1 Be7
