GrahamClayton: According to David Levy in the May 1979 issue of "CHESS", this game was played in a match to determine which country would play in the European Championship.

The players had made an agreement that Gheorghiu would win the first game, and Tringov would win the second game.

However, when Tringov played 48.♔c3??, Gheorgiu "double-crossed" him by playing 48...♘c2#, which guaranteed Romania's participation in the European Championship.

Teyss: A taste of one's own medicine. Here is the first abovementioned game: Gheorghiu vs G Tringov, 1971

The worse thing is, after 48.Ka3 instead of Kc3?? White wins: the a6 Pawn is more of an issue than the e3 one (+7.1 at 34 ply). And this was after time control. Possibly Tringov thought he could play anything since the result was certain.

Lesson: if you want to prearrange games, better go for draws, it's easier to control. Maybe the players thought two decisive games would attract less scrutiny than two draws. Fail.
