notyetagm: A great finishing move, 30 ♖xd5!. If the White rook is taken by 30 ... ♖xd5, then after 31 c7 the only way to stop the pawn from queening is by 31 ... ♖d8 32 cxd8=♕+ ♔xd8 and White is up a piece for a pawn. If the White rook is not taken after 30 ♖xd5, then Carlsen is simply down a piece for nothing.

<A very nice petite combination based on two pawn promotion themes in the position resulting from 30 ... ♖xd5 31 c7: the square of the pawn and rooks stopping 7th rank passed pawns on adjacent files.> First, the Black king is unable to stop the c7-pawn from promoting because it cannot get into the square of the passed c-pawn since the b5-bishop covers the d7-square. Secondly, the Black rook is not able to stop the c7-pawn from queening either. The rook needs to cover the promotion square, c8, to prevent the passed pawn from queening. The rook can't get behind the pawn to cover c8 by x-ray because the b4-pawn controls c5 and the rook can't get back to the 8th rank to cover c8 because the c7-pawn controls the d8-square. <This example is a textbook illustration of the difficulty that a rook has in stopping the promotion of a 7th rank passed pawn on an adjacent file.> Anand saw this and Carlsen missed it.

Jun-14-05  lopium: I think we are all able to see that the rook can't stop the pawn to queen. But when you (notyetagm) you say that Anand saw it and Carlsen missed it, you mean that because Carlsen played 28...Rxh5 instead of doing another move? If no, why so?
May-13-06  MagnaPsygnosis: Lets face it like men... Magnus is struggling to hold back his true colors .... the colors of a fruitcake

Mar-17-12  Savarkar 22: 2005?? Magnus was something like 13-14 at that time...? Not surprised he lost....give him a break guys!
Mar-17-12  King Death: Reading the smug attitude of one particular kibitz here makes me laugh, like that player would've been able to see half of what the 14 year old Carlsen must have at the board.

Penguincw: I like the final "removing the defender" move. That knight was guarding c7, and now it won't.
