Sep-09-05  uunnkknnoowwnn: Beautiful game by white!
Oct-20-05  jamesmaskell: What a finish! I would have taken the rook too. Fantastic rook sacrifice!
Jan-02-06  simsan: Nice puzzle game. 18. white to play and win ..
Mar-30-06  Devilz: That was pretty tough for thursday!
Mar-30-06  lunacyfrog: I've seen this theme before with the Q on h6 impervious to the g pawn because of mate by bishop and knight, so rc7 took me only about 2 seconds to figure out.
Mar-30-06  notsodeepthought: <jamesmaskell: What a finish! I would have taken the rook too.> Not that black had a choice really - if he didn't take the rook, he would lose the bishop in b7.

On move 19, black is lost even if he tries to decline the queen sacrifice - e.g. 19 ... Bf6 then simply 20 B:f6.

Mar-30-06  Capa15: Good clearance by the rook.
Mar-30-06  blingice: Yeah! I saw it pretty quickly, actually.
Mar-30-06  unclewalter: blinqice, were you in the band at NW? i have a friend who played trombone there.
Mar-30-06  Infohunter: Not too hard for a Thursday puzzle. There was a mating pattern with the Bishop and Knight which could be actualized by means of a Queen sacrifice. Only problem was the Rook in the way of the Bishop. Hence the question boiled down to one of how to move the obstructing Rook without losing a tempo. When the position is seen in that light, 18.Rc7 practically jumps off the board at the solver.
Mar-30-06  zev22407: It must be on the g7 point.

Sneaky: I looked at this for a second and it reminded me of some Wednesday puzzles I've seen before. I said to myself "Oh I see, it's Qh6" because gxh6 Nxh6#. But my eyes were playing tricks, I thought the bishop on b2 had its diagonal open, but then I saw that rook on c3. No problem! I ask myself: "OK, where's the most OBNOXIOUS place to move that rook?" Voila, problem solved.
Mar-30-06  unclewalter: good chess can be kind of obnoxious.

Sneaky: So can good chess players ;-)
Mar-30-06  Soltari: very nice combo, I didn't come close to solving it.
Mar-30-06  prinsallan: Very nice indeed. Missed it though. :P
Mar-30-06  Aware: Surprisingly I got this one. 3 out of 4 this week so far (missed Tuesdays). I hope to get Fridays, sadly I don't even attempt Sat/Sun puzzles...one day.
Mar-30-06  dzechiel: The first candidate move I considered was 18 Rc7 because it was so forcing. But I didn't know how to follow it up! Then I started looking at other themes, including 18 Nxg7 (nothing there), various captures (still nothing) and then queen moves. At that point I noticed that if the queen was captured on h6, the knight recapture would be mate IF the rook wasn't in the way. Back to my original idea! Now it all became very clear on how to follow up 18 Rc7! I great finish for Kuemin!
Mar-30-06  Willem Wallekers: Easy for a thursday, but very elegant, as Infohunter and Sneaky said before me. It had to be Qh6, Nxg7 or Rc7. Just try those out and pick the right one.
Mar-30-06  Rookinstein: Found this one instantly. Nice one for a thursday puzzle 18.♖c7!! ♕xc7 19.♕h6!! gxh6 [19...♗f6 20.♗xf6 ♘xf6 21.♕xg7# which wud have prolonged the game by a move or two! lol] 20.♘xh6#
Mar-30-06  Hongkonger: Very beautiful and I missed it. I went for the boring 18.Bxd5 when following a mass of exchanges finishing with the black Q on d5, white plays Nxe7+. Unless my calculations are wrong I think that gets W two pieces and a pawn for a rook which ought to be winning, though obviously not as cleanly and elegantly as in the game.
Mar-30-06  WarmasterKron: I looked at a few things, including Nxg7 which seemed to lead nowhere, and settled on Rc7, but I couldn't see the continuation. Looking at it now, it seems very obvious.
Mar-30-06  blingice: <unclewalter> No, my older brother goes there. I would be quite happy if I went there though, and my extracurriculars and grades seem to be on a track towards it, fortunately.
Mar-30-06  rochade18: Oh this was actually a hard one for me

first move I saw was Nh6 which makes no sense. Then Qh6 still doesn't work as first move. But then Rc7 is obvious and I had my right move order.

Mar-30-06  Mattheus: Mmmm.. What about 18Nxg7 Kxg7 19Rc7+ winning the queen with a discovered check? If black plays 18... Kh8 instead, the queen still falls to 19Rc7 Qxc7 20Ne6/e8
