FSR: Why not 8...Qxb5 and White resigns?

FSR: Stein's 8...a6?? was a theoretical novelty of sorts. Remarkably, 8.Nb5?? was also played by Spassky(!) in Spassky vs Rodgaisky, 1948 Rodgaisky of course played 8...Qxb5 and Spassky did indeed resign. Even though Spassky missed this (at age 11), I am amazed that both Stein and Schiller apparently also did so.

I agree, but I don't see how to explain it away as a mistake in the game score, a different move order or some such. It occurred to me that I have the tournament book for this tournament. FWIW, it gives the exact same game (with no notes, unfortunately) except that it gives 8.Nb5 rather than 8.Ndb5 as given in the chessgames.com score. Evidently whoever was assembling the tournament book (Kevin Bachler was the editor) noticed that 8.Ncb5 was illegal and that "8.Nb5" was thus sufficient and unambiguous. But if this really is the correct score, it's even more incredible that Bachler would also fail to notice and comment on this horrific double blunder. You would also think that someone at the tournament would have noticed this, and that it would become a source of amused commentary, which would lead to a mention in the tournament book. So I don't know what to think.

Jan-01-12  King Death: There's something else I don't get about this game. Why did Black play 28...f5? He could have tried 28...g5 29.Qh5 Nf4 29.Qg4 Nf6 or 29.Qg3 Ra3 all of which look very good for him. 28...g5 looks weakening at first but I don't see how White can make use of that.

Better lay off the champagne. Knights can't move from f4 to f6. :-)

Jan-01-12  King Death: <FSR> I'll rephrase that: after 28...f5, 29.Qh5 Nf4 or 29.Qg4 Nf6. Maybe I was just tipsy on life or something. And Kramnik thinks Anand can make magic with his knights? They're both lucky they never had to play me!
