Kurt W. Stein was born in Chicago on July 4, 1959. He became a National Master while still a teenager. He was an enthusiastic devotee of 1.e4 as White, and the Benko Gambit and Sveshnikov Sicilian as Black. He was the 1976 Illinois State co-champion, tied with Andrew Karklins, Edward Friedman, and John Tums.

Stein became a Senior International Master of correspondence chess in 2020. He died unexpectedly at his home in Lombard, Illinois on July 30, 2021. At the time of his death, his correspondence rating was 2540 and he was ranked approximately No. 70 in the world.

  FSR: Very sad and unexpected.
Aug-14-21  Granny O Doul: The first chess club I attended was the one he belonged to. He wasn't around much at that particular time, due to school, but he seemed to be the idol of the very slightly younger generation there. The last time I saw him was at the 1998 Chicago Open, in the bar afterward where he was talking to Fedorowicz, just as the obit linked above might suggest. Anyway, he was clearly a very functional human being. RIP.
