Jan-22-06  patzer2: Perhaps developing with 6...Bg2 (as in V Cmilyte vs A Matnadze, 2005) instead of 6...Bxf3 would have avoided some of the problems Shirov faced in this Rapid game.

In any event, after 16...c5!? Black is busted. And though 16...Nc4 puts up more resistance, even this may not be enough to save Black's game.

The surprise move in this rapid game is White's sacrifice with 18. Bxd4!! On the surface, moving a piece where it is defended once and attacked twice looks like a beginners mistake, which simply drops a piece.

However, as play unfolds after 18. Bxd4!!, with 21. g5! and 22. g6! in particular, it is clear White has seen deeper in the position and gains a decisive attack against the weak Black Kingside as a result of this positional, attacking sham sacrifice
