notyetagm: Wow, here 11-year old Yifan Hou beats her much higher rated opponent in a mere 32 moves.

notyetagm: What a tremendous game this is. Incredible for an 11-year old. I could barely move the pieces at that age.

Magnus ain't got nothing on her.

notyetagm: Zhukova paid a terrible price in this game for not getting her rooks connected.
Mar-14-06   s4life: The combination was very pretty indeed...

  notyetagm: <s4life> And she's only 11!

twinlark: If 24...Rxf7 25.Qd8+ ends up winning a whole Rook.

Zhukova must have been rattled to have overlooked resigning after White's 31.Qf7 when loss of a piece is clearly unavoidable.

notyetagm: <twinlark> 24 Bxf7+! must have been a very unpleasant surprise.

  notyetagm: 21 fxe4!?

I just love how confident Yifan Hou is in her tactical ability that she takes on an isolated e-pawn just to get some pressure down the f-file against the eternally weak f7-square.

twinlark: <notyetagm> She has that same cool confidence as Magnus. Take a look at her first round game: Yifan Hou vs N Kosintseva, 2006. Her Knight moves are a treat.

notyetagm: <twinlark> I have already checked that game out.

This young girl is freaking amazing.

notyetagm: Yifan Hou's 24 Bxf7+! is very similar to the great 33 Bxe4+! played by Alekhine in Alekhine vs Tartakower, 1930.

The main tactical point of each is identical: trade down from two attackers two defenders to one attacker one defender only king defender, <making a loose piece in the process>, and then exploit this loose piece tactically, in both cases by <removal of the guard>.

Once again, <Loose Pieces Drop Off (LPDO)>; in these two examples an initial sacrifice is made to create the loose piece (e4-bishop in Alekhine's game, f7-rook here).

Mar-14-06   Badmojo: I like Yi Fan's name. Translated, it means "plain sailing." There are no storms for this girl. She just sails right along in a beautiful sea, racking up points with relative ease.
Mar-14-06   s4life: This game played last year in which Almira loses a piece after a nice combination, should have served as a big warning to the other players :)

A Skripchenko-Lautier vs Yifan Hou, 2005

Jan-23-07   Whitehat1963: Great move after 23...Ne7; It would make for a good puzzle. Took me a minute to see that if 24...Rxf7, then 25. Qd8+ Qxd8 26. Rxd8+ Kh7 27. Rxf7 wins a rook. Yes, I'm that blind.
Apr-14-09   WhiteRook48: 24. Bxf7+!!
