May-25-06  EmperorAtahualpa: Surely Radziewicz can expect that Kosteniuk knows how to mate with a knight and bishop.
May-25-06  iWaNnAbAgM: If i was Radziewics (Which i could never be for three reasons 1.It's simply not possible,2.she's a gm,3 she's a girl and i'm not.)i wouldv'e continued playing maybe look for the 50 move rule or a STALEMATE!!
May-27-06  dehanne: I wonder if there's one GM on earth who doesn't know how to mate with ♘+♗
Apr-08-07  ForeverYoung: I recall reading that Botvinnik wanted Matulovic to be stripped of his GM title because he couldn't do it when he was faced with the task.

Eggman: Video of this game here on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bThb...

I think that Rajlich is a bit of a poor sport here. There are spectators who would enjoy seeing this played out, so why not do so? IMs and GMs have no regard for the fans, and it hurts the popularity of the game, though this is far from an egregious example.

Jun-11-08  whiteshark: Nice little video, <Eggman>. Good find!

Have you seen what happened before black played her last move <72...Kd7> ? She put the King on e7 (check). Does that mean anything to you ? I think black was shattered and this oversight let her finally resign.

Jun-11-08  Travis Bickle: Very nice game by Alexandra! Hey that reminds me, when Boris Spassky made a statement to President Bush on Bobby Fischers behalf on the absurdity of Bobby's inprisonment, Boris said "I am guilty of playing chess also put me in prsion with Bobby and give us a board of chess". To which Bobby after he got wind of Spasskys statement replied with quick wit "send me (Alexandria Kosteniuk), that hot Russian chess babe instead". I must say that was a good choice by Robert! ; P

Richard Taylor: <Travis Bickle> but Fischer said he thought women had small brains and they would never beat men.

"Hot Chess babe" ? Did you me this up?

Fischer didn't talk like that... He was sad, pathetic case - of course. he was also rude to anyone who questioned him when he got to Rykjavik and refused to sign a book for some poor fellow and abused a Jewish Chess master. Very few people liked Fischer personlly in the end you have to realise Travis - yes he was a marvelous chess player ..but...not liked much.

Richard Taylor: She is a beautiful woman of course.

Richard, Fischer did say he would rather have Kostenuik as a chess cell mate instead of Spassky who Bobby called a "Frenemy" (friend enemy) because Robert was upset about something Boris had said. Bobby's opinion of women changed over the years. He asked to meet Susan Polgar after the 1992 Spassky match in Hungary. He played Sofia and Susan, Fischer Random, analysed with Susan, who later said "it was one of the highlights on my chess career", and he also played ping pong with all the Polgar sisters.

Richard Taylor: <Travis Bickle> I know he stayed with Polgars but the father kicked him out partly for his constant anti Semitic ranting. I watched the video of Fischer etc and I have read number of books about him and have played many of his games BU

I am adverse to the kind of uncritical hero worship and the rather sick view that some people take from Fischer...particularly his heartless attitudes (Lasker's ideas on life and Chess I admire very much) but I do know he was complex and troubled - well all of us complex. That said I think you will find that the was disliked very much by many many chess players... Larry Christiansen told me he found Fischer very unpleasant to be around.

He was also wrong about a lot of things e.g. about Lasker and Kasparov - who I didn't think were good chess players -he became in his declining years a pathetic, undignified figure, disliked by many. (Korchnoi is one).

Better for you to look to such as Kasparov/ Karpov/ Lasker/ Smyslov/ Tal/ Petrosian/ Korchnoi/ Capa/ Rubinstein/ Anand or even Kramnik but anyone apart from Fischer as a role model of behaviour.

I, BTW, still study his games.

There is parallel with the great literary man Ezra Pound. Ezra Pound became anti Semitic (and broadcast against his own country the US from Italy during WW11) - but I think he was one of the greatest writers ever...but he also was rather a pathetic figure. Yet many people liked him as personally he was more human or "likable" than Fischer...

A ? hangs over Alekhine also (he was alleged to be a Nazi collaborator - even though he like Fischer was Jewish) but it is said he was very charming personally (by du Mont).

I'm not opposed to people challenging the US Govt BTW - I admire (some of) Fischer's obdurate stances (especially when he was young) but not the nastiness. By the time he got to Iceland he was not worth knowing.

Nov-23-08  apple pi: <Kasparov/ Karpov/ Lasker/ Smyslov/ Tal/ Petrosian/ Korchnoi/ Capa/ Rubinstein/ Anand or even Kramnik> Tal yes. Anand maybe. The rest are jerks.
