Aug-04-06  shr0pshire: 13. Nxb5 is a positional sacrifice in the sicilian where white hopes to storm the queen side pawns to victory.

I have never seen this sacrifice used at such a high level before, even though it is theory and mentioned in some sacrifice books.

It is intersting to see Almasi's positional ideas behind it.

I think this is a very instructional positional game.

Aug-05-06  Albertan: If Yue had taken the pawn on move 24...Rxc3 play might have continued: 25.b5 Qa7 26.Qd5 Bf8 27.b6 Qa6 28.Qe6 Kg7 29.Ra4 (threatening Rh4+) h5 30.h3 Qe2 31.Raa1 Qa6 32.Rc1 Qd3 33.Qd7+ Kg8 34.a6 Rxb6 35.a7 Ra6 36.Rd1 Raa3 37.Qe8 Qe4 38.a8(R) Qxa8 39.Qxa8 Rxa8 40.Rxa8
Aug-05-06  Albertan: I wonder why Almasi didn't play 37.d6 instead of 27.Rc4 ? If he had played 37.d6 then play might have continued: 37...Qh6 38.Rd1 Qxe6 39.fxe6 Kg7 40.e7 Bxe7 41.dxe7 Re8 42.Rd7 Kf6 43.Kf1 Rc8
Sep-11-06  AdrianP: <shropshire> It's been played before by Almasi and by Karjakin (unsuccessfully) a couple of times. I've won a game with 11. Bxb5?! (maybe not quite the same position) with the same idea.

The idea is quite promising - White usually gets an attack and a monster knight on d5. If the attack doesn't reap rewards he still has some compensation in view of the queenside pawns.
