Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-30-10  paladin at large: Muffang, who I believe was once French champion, gets too cute here and carelessly neglects to castle. One of a number of attractive games by Monticelli, once Italian champion.

What's wrong with 20...♕g6+?

Sally Simpson: It is strange because Andre Muffang was a good player and before resigning players tend to look for checks and any passing straws.

The score might be incomplete and 20..Qg6+ was played but Black went to lose.

Perhaps Black's 12th move was 12...Qc7 then the same moves follow on in a sensible fashion so 20...Qg6+ was not an option and 19...Nf6-d7 was a bad blunder.

The only problem is here with the BQ on c7 in the assumed position and after 19...Nf6-d7

20.Qe4 is good, 20...Nb6 holds the game together but White is better. However 20.Rxe7+ followed by 21.Qe4+ and White is winning.

I can see a player playing the 19...Nf6-d7 blunder. But not resigning when there is a Queens off check in the position.
But now I'm adding in another good player missing 20.Rxe7+ and the player resigning missing 20...Nb6.
If the score and result is sound and Black did resign then so be it, but I would not be surprised if it is an incomplete score.

(Italy v France, the result was 2-2.)
