  tpstar: Black chose the ugly 13 ... gxf6 due to 13 ... Qxf6?? 14. Bg5 trapping the Queen:

Black also avoided 13 ... cxb2?! 14. fxe7 bxa1=Q due to 15. Bxh7+! Kxh7 16. exf8=Q and White has two Queens.

Sparkling game.

Jun-05-17  ChessHigherCat: Hi <tpstar> Can black really survive 16. Qh4, f5 17. Bg5, f6 18. Bg6+ Kg8?? Or 16 Qh4 f5 17. Ng5 f6 18. Bg6+ Kg8? I can't find a mate either way but it's probably due to my incompetence, it's hard to believe there's no mate there.

BTW, is that a moray eel? Here's another smiley cutie-pie you might like: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/4361....

*****

<ChessHigherCat> 16. Qh4 looks very tempting, crossing the board to attack Black's King. After 16 ... f5 17. Bg5 then 17 ... f6 is a Discovery on the Bh7:

18. Bg6+ Kg8 19. Bh6 looks strong (19 ... cxb2? 20. Bxf8 Qxf8? 21. Qh7#; 20 ... Kxf8? 21. Qh8#) so Black must try 19 ... Rd8:

Before using an engine, what do you think is best play from here?

Jun-08-17  ChessHigherCat: <tpstar> Good question. First of all, I see all kinds of things that don't work.

If 20. Bf8, Qxf8?? 21. Qh7# and 20..Kxf8?? 21. Qh8#, but if 21..Rxf8 black is okay. Therefore, the key might be to distract the rook, but I don't see any good way to do it.

If 20. Ng5, then Bf7+ is a big threat so black has to play fxg4 21. Bxg4 Qg7 and black' s problems are over after 22. Bxe1 Bxe1.

20. Qg3 is very interesting, is that it? There there are lots of complications with the pawn pushes, e.g., if f4 21. Qxf4 e5...

More puzzles. =)

<ChessHigherCat> You were right that 16. Qh4 is a strong attacking move, then 17. Ng5 works even better than 17. Bg5. After 16. Be4 instead, Fritz 10 had White at +2 so maybe he thought that line was too murky.

I disagree with Black playing 3 ... Bb4 only to play ... d5 later, as then the Bishop doesn't help fight for the center.
