Mar-14-08  Benzol: A great game by <Richard> and one he can be justly proud of. It won the best game prize for the 1980/81 NZ Correspondence Championship.

Richard Taylor: <Benzol> Thanks! great to see it... Murray Chandler featured this game one week when he had the Listener Column, he talksed about "Mailmen" - correspondence chess - he himself played once when he was starting out - I sent it to him as it won Best Game Prize and I had met him once briefly at Paul Spiller's house - the position where the Q and 2 rooks line up is fun! I think it was the next year or two hat I came a cropper against such as Bob Smith, Garbett, bith Tom and Peter van Dijk Bob Gibbons, Glenn Turner, Roger Chapman who won a few times ... so did Glenn. I found in the the finish that Chess was taking up too much time...

As Richard Sutton once said correspondence Chess is the best form of chess ... it is still good but very time consuming and even tiring!

Richard Taylor: Thanks <Sallom89> GM Murray Chandler (I had met him at Paul Spiller's place once) actually put this game in the NZ Listener in about 1986 or so. He titled it "Mailmen" & included a commentary about postal Chess - he himself started by playing correspondence chess (in Wainuiomata near Wellington NZ) and found that one of his opponents lived across the road so they got to play a lot of games!
