Mar-13-09  Elbajac: I remember watching this game live at some college in Southport. It was a very exciting battle, and Mestel had a really long think after 13..B-d4. It was probably the pivotal game of the British Championship that year, and well worth playing through. Happy Birthday Mr Mestel by the way!
Mar-13-09  MarkThornton: I also watched this game live, at Southport. It was an extraordinary battle. As I recall, it took place in Round 10 of 11 rounds, when Mestel and Hodgson were the only two players who could possibly win the Championship. This game settled it.
Aug-18-11  TheGadge: What's wrong with 14.exd7? Perhaps Mestel felt the pin with 14.Qb3 was a better shot. Hodgson also misses 18...Nxg3 which should win. Great game though!
Feb-08-18  paavoh: <What's wrong with 14.exd7?> To my eye, nothing wrong there: 14.- Bxd7 15.Bc4+ Kh8 16.Bg5 and 17.Qb3 looks quite good.
