Feb-15-11  David2009: J Salas Romo vs E Eliskases, 1941 ends in mate with NN vs P, in a wonderful ending by Eliskases, but the critical position occurs much earlier(move 39).

White's major chance to avoid the loss was to exchange Queens 39.Qxe3 dxe3 40.Nd3. The ending is difficult but as played Black won the King side Pawns too cheaply. The rest of the ending is well played by both sides. At around move 73 White has an almost impossible task. He needs to exchange B for N to avoid losing with K against KBN. He needs to give up his R for the last Pawn. Finally he needs to plar b3-b4 to avoid entering a losing NN vs P ending. He is never given time to do all of these. He did the best he could at move 73

by exchanging B for N starting 73.Ng5 Bxg5 74.Kxg5
d3 and then finding a little combination 75.Re3 d2 76.Rd3 d1Q 77.Rxd1 Nxd1 78.Kxh4 to give up the R for the last two Black Pawns. This was necessary because Black threatens to shut the WR out of the queening square d1 with a N and then promote. White needed one extra move to play b3-b4 and draw - but Eliskases never gives him the opportunity.

Black could have lasted longer, but the ending is difficult to defend.

Mateo: <David2009> Interesting comment. I do agree with you that 39.Qxe3 dxe3 40.Nd3 should be considered. But for some reason, Stockfish prefers 39.Qc6!? actually played, although White loses a pawn.
