Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-21-10  ounos: A very interesting endgame. Ruslan must have been winning at some point.

(Probably *before* this point). Here is the key point of Wang's defence: the knight cannot be prevented from going to g6. 37. Ba4 would be very strong (37. ...Qf4 38. Qe3)...if black didn't have Nxg4! in response. After that, the knight is too strong, and black pawns untouchable unless the white king leaves the knight to chop off pawns unhindered.

But how could Ruslan win? That's the question. It's quite obvious that at some point he had significant advantage. 32. Qc8+ and Qd8 were useless, the queen was well posted on c3. Hmm.

Jun-23-10  DLev: 37. a4? throws away the win. If Ponomariov plays 37 Qxa7 he will be up two passed pawns and his queen is still reasonably positioned for defense in the event of 37 ... Nd3 and 38 ... Nf4+.

On move 34 Ponomariov could have grabbed the h pawn and also had a 2 pawn advantage with a reasonably safe king.

<<24.Bc3>

Getting rid of the strong bishop on d4. Bg2 is better than Nb6.

I also like Rybka’s suggestion: 24.Bg5 Rd7 25.Bf3, which gives White a pleasant long term pressure. I doubt many players will head this way on purpose with Black.>
