36.Be4 is a howler, a blindfold blindness.

That's going to happen a lot in blindfold games. You know what they say, "Unprotected pieces leads to tactics".

Mar-13-11  pulsar: <Penguincw> But the game between Carlsen and Nakamura was even worse. Still admirable how these GMs play without sight of the board. :)

Penguincw: But I doubt this is going to happen at this very high level of play in classical time controls.
Jan-04-12  beckerqueiroz: Although this is a blindfold game, it's worth noticing that Gelfand had played the same position against Gashimov and to 12.Ng5 had responded 12...Nxc4. Then in the 2010 Tal Memorial he lost against Karjakin, who played 11.Kb1 instead of 11.c4. Still in the Tal, a few rounds later, Karjakin played 11.c4 against Kramnik, who tried the novelty 12...Bf5. This was considered dubious and I don't think many people looked into 12...Bf5 again, seeing the way Kramnik had been crushed in that game. Then comes Gelfand and avenges his earlier loss in the Petroff by playing the same 12...Bf5, but with a different idea: using f6 to push away the Knight, instead of h6 (which allowed for h4 in Kramnik's game). I'm sorry Kramnik hasn't been playing the Petroff lately (he doing his Berlin Wall stuff again), for I would like to see this variation and know if he would try the same variation again. Well, maybe sometime he will, let's just wait.
