HeMateMe: Gelfand easily equalized here, with control of the open lanes on the queenside. Nak might have to use something else, with white.

Hard to understand Nakamura's choice.
I mean with Kasparov as coach who played Gelfand +13 -0 =9 I would have expected something more enterprising from Nakamura.
Nov-16-11  savagerules: Seems like Kasparov and/or Nakamura haven't found an antidote to the Petroff Defense, which is probably what Gelfand would have played in case of 1 e4.
Nov-16-11  JoergWalter: <savagerules>
maybe, but 1.e4 might have given a sicilian. I think Nakamura was not in fighting spirit.
Nov-16-11  Atking: Why not 14.BxB RxR 15.Qe2 with 16.f5?
Nov-16-11  JoergWalter: <Atking> doesn't that give Black a tempo to occupy the a file?
Nov-16-11  achk: Nice play by Gelfand.
Nov-16-11  Jambow: Nothing remarkable about this game.
Nov-17-11  Atking: <JoergWalter: <Atking> doesn't that give Black a tempo to occupy the a file?> Do you mean 15...Rfa8? It's a bit more complicated that I thought at first but 14.BxB RxB 15.Qe2 Rfa8 16.b5 R6a7 17.bxc Qxc6 18.Nb5 Rb7 19.cxb Rxb6 20.a4 with Rac1~c7 or with f5 still I think white has an edge.

He doesn't have any WCC coming up, and it's his first game at the Tal Memorial, and with the white pieces, how can he not be in a fighting spirit? Can't blame tiredness or lack of fighting will.. from what i remember, he used to play till bare kings and people criticized him.. maybe he's lost that fighting spirit after working with Kasparov? Hehe, that sounds silly doesn't it?

Not having gone through it with an engine, i don't think he had any real chances to play for a win, Gelfand equalized quite easily as someone(you? heh)said. I really don't think that's because Naka was not in a fighting spirit.. maybe just got surprised in the opening or something.

Also, i'm not a pro, but can anyone tell me if it's mainline to play 8.Be2 and let black take his DSB with the knight? ie 8.Nxf4? I thought doubled pawns and giving up your bishop was bad.. is 8.Bg3 a 'bad' move? Because i probably would of played that(i'm patzer though :p).. And if they capture with knight on g3 after that, is the reply automatically hxg3 opening up lines for his rook, or is castling and open f file better?

Maybe he could of even kept his king in the center after.. is that what you guys are talking about when saying he didn't play with fighting spirit? Ie he went for the exchanges and simplified down instead of like trying to keep it complicated? Did he have any real chance but for that? Anyone with engine can answer?

Nov-24-11  kibitzwc: Looks like white played the opening somewhat lazily. No wonder gelfand was able to equalize. naka needs something better for white...
